~ Chapter Five ~

Yunho's POV:

[4 months later]

Today was a very special day. I was going to take JaeJoong to the amusement park to play after we were done shopping. The reason why I was taking him out was because tonight I was going to tell him I signed the papers to adopt him. I was now officially his legal guardian. He’ll be happy to hear the news and I couldn’t wait to tell him.

“Okay Jae, are you ready to go?”

He nodded his head, “I never went to an amusement park before. Is it fun?”

“Oh yeah, it’s a lot of fun. I went there plenty of times when I was a kid and I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I did.”

“I can’t wait to go!” he squealed excitedly. I chuckled, “don’t worry; it’s only an hour away. It won’t take very long.”

JaeJoong sighed, “Ugh, are you kidding me? An hour is a very long time! What are we going to do for an hour driving in a car?”

“Well, I can think of a couple of things" I responded while leaning over his seat and kissing his lips gently.

JaeJoong giggled, “I don’t want to do that here. What if people see us?”

“So? I don’t care. Let them see what we do.”

He giggled again and I held his hand. JaeJoong put his hand over mines and we drove just like that to the park.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Jae, wake up. We’re here” I shook him softly.

He sat up and rubbed his eyes. I got out of the car and went around to his side and helped him out. He looked around the wide open area and smiled. The smell of cotton candy, snow cones, and hot dogs lingered in the air.

“Wow, this does look like fun! Can we go on that?” he asked pointing to a roller coaster.

“Umm, I think that’s a little too dangerous to go on. How about we go on a smaller one, like that one?” I suggested, pointing towards a mini dragon one.

He pouted, “but that’s for babies, I’m a big boy and I wanna go on that one” he insisted.

I sighed. I knew if I didn’t give in to him, he was going to throw a tantrum, so I promised him we’ll go on it before we leave. We walked further into the park and went on the Ferris wheel.

“Yunho, it’s so high. What if I fall off?”

I laughed, “Jae, I promise you won’t fall off. It’ll be fun, ok?”

He held my hand and gave it a tight squeeze. “Ok” he mumbled.

I led him into the cart and we sat down opposite from each other. He moved closer to me and held me around my waist. He buried his head in my chest as the ride began. He squeezed me tighter and tighter the higher we went and I thought I was going to die from lack of oxygen.

“Jae, not so tight. Look at that” I tried to distract him and he looked up.

He scooted closer towards the railing and smiled. “Yunho, it’s so pretty!” he said and continued to stare out at the view. “It’s really big. I wish we could ride everything.”

“So do I Jae” I answered, kissing the top of his head.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“That looks fun too” JaeJoong said as he skipped over to the merry-go-round.

We waited until we were next in line. When it was our turn, he got on the biggest horse there was with me standing next to him. He was laughing and enjoying the ride, and I was extremely happy to see him so excited. I couldn’t wait to tell him what I had planned for tonight. I was more excited for that than anything else right now. JaeJoong was mine to keep, all thanks to a friend who got me connections.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It was time to go and I tried to leave the park as fast as I could, but JaeJoong remembered the roller coaster I promised he could go on. I swore under my breath and we went on it. JaeJoong seemed to enjoy it, but it was just me who was freaking out. Man, how long has it been since I went on one of these things?

As we were leaving the entrance gates, a man passed by with a stand filled with balloons.

“Yunho, I want one of those!”

I turned to see where he was pointing at and smiled. “Ok Jae, which color do you want?” I asked him.

“Mmm, the red one.”

I walked up to the guy and told him I wanted a red balloon and gave in to JaeJoong. He giggled as I handed it to him and held my hand as we walked out of the park.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“That was so much fun. Thanks for taking me there Yunho” he said, leaning over the space between us and kissing me full on the lips.

I smiled, “no problem, anything for you."

He giggled and rested his head on my shoulder. “I wished this day would never end” he said.

“Me too.” I honestly didn’t want the day to come to an end, but I still couldn’t wait to tell him the good news.

“You can stop here” I told the cab driver.

He pulled over to the curb and let us out. We stopped right in front of a food stand. “Are you hungry?” I asked JaeJoong. I heard his stomach growl and looked down at it.

“Very hungry” he said while rubbing his tummy.

“Wait here” I instructed and turned my back to him to order our food.

JaeJoong was busy sitting on the bench playing with his red balloon. He held onto it for dear life and wouldn’t dare to let go of it. When he was fiddling with it, the string slipped from his fingers and floated into the sky.

“My balloon!” he shrieked.

I turned around at the sound of his voice and saw what made me fear for his safety - JaeJoong running across the street trying to reach for it.

“JaeJoong, come back here!” I yelled at the top of my lungs.

He kept running after it and didn’t bother with what I was saying or the danger he was putting himself in. I wanted to run across the street and pull him back here next to me, but there were so many cars coming, I couldn’t step not one foot on the road.

Something caught my attention from the corner of my eye. It caused me to turn just then to see an oncoming truck headed straight for JaeJoong.

“JaeJoong, get out of the way!” I yelled again over the loud traffic noises.

He finally turned around … but by then, it had already been too late. I couldn’t do anything for him, except stare at the horrifying incident that was occurring right before my eyes. I needed to run over to save him, but I couldn’t move. I watched as JaeJoong was being run over by an 18-wheeler truck. The vehicle collided with JaeJoong and he could be seen underneath the car, a pool of blood now forming under two of the wheels.

“J-Jae!” I ran over to his run down, bloodied up body.

I pulled him out from under and held him in my arms, “JaeJoong, JaeJoong are you ok?!” I knew it was a dumb question to ask, but seeing him like this, my mind went blank. “Someone call the ambulance!”

“Yunho … I - I’m sorry.”

I shook my head, “don’t talk JaeJoong. The ambulance is on the way. Just hold on for a bit longer.”

He smiled at me, “Yunho … thank you … for taking care of me. Thank you … for feeding me. Thank you … for everything. You … made me … such a happy person. Even if … I never told you this before … I’ll always remember you … because you were … the only person in my life … that actually …. made me feel wanted. You gave me … a reason to live … and you … never gave up on me…and because of that … I love you … Yunho”  he said, struggling to breathe out every word he said.

I couldn’t control my tears then, so I just let everything out.

“Please … forgive me … for giving you … such a hard time … when we were … living together. I understand everything now. Thank you so much … Yunho …”

He suddenly stopped moving and breathing all at once. I looked down at him and panicked, "Jae? Jae wake up! Jae please you can’t leave me! I promise I’ll take better care of you, just please…”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I hugged his lifeless body against mines and sobbed uncontrollably. I didn’t expect this would happen on this same day we were supposed to stay together forever.

“Jae please, wake up! I love you too. I never thought you were annoying no matter how much trouble you gave me! I loved it, I loved everything about you! Why? Why are you leaving me? You were supposed to live! Jae!”  I shook his body vigorously, expecting him to wake up, when I knew, even if I were to reverse time, I myself couldn’t have stopped this incident from occurring.

I heard the ambulance coming and I let go of his body. With tears still strolling down my cheeks, I never bothered to wipe them away. Half of my tears were tears of joy and the other half were tears of sadness. I got up and walked away from the scene, I walked away from my life that is now gone. I’m trying desperately to be strong, not only for me, but for the JaeJoong who I knew and loved.

My JaeJoong … from this day forward … is dead.
