Summary: It's always sometimes.
Sometimes, he'll think it was easier, before. Sorata was dead, Subaru was worse than dead, and maybe he clung so hard to bringing Fuuma back because it was easier to believe he was gone than his best friend was really the same person who had killed Kotori.
Sometimes, he'll tell himself that it wasn't all for the bad. They're still together they still have something - love isn't the word because it's been beyond love since he made his choice to protect humanity - despite everything. They were strong enough to survive. What they have is strong enough to last.
Sometimes it was like that.
Sometimes, he'll look at Fuuma and see his best friend and the man he loved and not the face of the person who killed his other best friend. He'll remember the feeling of Fuuma hugging him when he came back to Tokyo and promising to protect him and not the feeling of Fuuma stabbing his leg with a sword.
Sometimes, when Kamui started talking, Fuuma will get that indulging look in his eye like when he Kamui wondered if both he and Kotori could wear a dress at their wedding (after all weddings were supposed to be special, he wore pants everyday) and Kamui will scowl at him and demand Fuuma tell him what he was doing wrong. Fuuma was still practical and that was a relief, because that was one thing he could admit to himself had never changed.
He was honest enough with himself to admit that he wasn't sure if he was doing the right thing, even if it was what he wanted, but he was glad he'd saved humanity so he could have a lifetime to figure it out.
