.035 sixth sense

"Ok now, close your eyes and reach inside yourself-geez that sounds cheezy-anyway, you should be able to sense your MP if you concentrate. It's right next to your HP. Got it? Ok now draw from it and feed it into the materia, slowly...slowly...slo-GAH! Cloud, don't forget to aim! You almost got me there!"

Cloud popped open his eyes and saw Zack standing on his right, just two inches away from the frozen grass that had resulted from the Ice 1 spell. "Oops, sorry!" Cloud apologized sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment.

Zack laughed and waved off the apology. "Don't worry about it. You did better than me on my first try. I nearly singed off my eyebrows. Ok now, lets try again..."

He stuck the Buster Sword in the ground for the second time, apologizing silently for letting someone knock it over the first time. Stepping back, he gripped the materia tightly in his left fist and murmured, "Hey Zack, I remember what you taught me. I've gotten better too, think you'd be proud." Swallowing hard he continued, "I'm sorry I lost your lightening materia, but hey, ice was the first you taught me." With a strained smile, he cast the Ice 3, watching as the ice encase the sword and solidify.

Stepping forward, he pressed his lips to the cool ice, the residue of the spell solidifying the tear that dropped onto it. "Bye, Zack."

.036 smell

The smell of homemade apple pie is something he's missed dearly since coming to Midgar. Before, his mother used to make one every weekend, sprinkling it with cinnamon and topping it off with a single mint leaf. Now, he lives off of the mockery they call food at the ShinRa cafeteria. Apple pie, edible apple pie, is a dream of the distant past.

Zack comes back from a month long mission, bone tired and aching. Wanting nothing more than to collapse on his bed and sleep for a week, he trudges down the corridor and inserts the key into his door, expecting nothing more than a dark and empty apartment on the other side. "Well, at least it will be warm," he comforts himself, shuddering at the memory of the mission up by Icicle Inn.

So it's a surprise to him when he opens the door and the smell of apples drifts by. He glances to the side and grins when he sees a pair of familiar boots on the shoe rack. There's only one person that would bother putting shoes on the rack in the first place. Kicking his shoes off haphazardly, he leaned his sword against the wall and let the door swing shut.

"Zack?" A blond head pokes out of the kitchen and when blue eyes see Zack standing at the doorway Cloud exclaims, "You're back!"

"Sure am, Spikey! What're you doing here, not that I mind."

"Oh!" Cloud's eyes widen and he hurriedly ducks back into the kitchen. There's a banging of pots and pans for a moment as Cloud calls back, "I heard you were getting back sometime today and I wanted to surprise you. You got back a bit early though." He emerges from the kitchen, carrying the pie in one hand and a bottle of cinnamon in the other. Setting the pie on the table, he sprinkles the cinnamon on top and looks at Zack through lowered lashes, "I got the apples from the market, but I couldn't find any mint leaves, sorry."

Zack's mouth waters as his heart melts and there's a lump in his throat that makes it hard to speak at first. But eventually he does, his eyes suspiciously bright, "Don't be. H-how did you know?"

Cloud looks down at his feet and rocks back on them. Blushing, he mumbled, "You told me once, when you were drunk. I thought, I thought it'd be nice to have something warm to eat after coming back from Icicle Inn. Sorry if it doesn't taste the greatest, I had to-eek!" He squeaked in surprise when Zack suddenly swept him up in a hug.

"I'm sure it tastes fine," Zack said roughly, placing a kiss on Cloud's open mouth, "better than fine, even! You're the best, you know that?"

Cloud whimpered and pulled Zack in for another kiss. "No," he breathed, "you are."

.037 sound

He hears a bird call and he thinks he's dreaming. Dreaming because he's been shut up and cooped up for so long that he doesn't believe he'll ever get out again. A voice murmurs in the background (Would you look at that Spikey, we made it!) and for once it's kind, warm, and familiar. Perhaps, he thinks, dreaming isn't so bad.

The bird calls again, and he dreams about flying.

.038 touch

The rocks are digging into his back, the wind chafing his skin. The sun is blinding but not warm, and the mako inside him burns. He can feel them advancing through the vibrations transmitted through the ground. There's a heavy body lying on top of him.

It jerks once, twice, and is still.

The vibrations are fading now; soon they're gone. Something warm and sticky falls on him, seeping into his clothing, seeping into his skin.

The rocks are digging into his back.

.039 taste

"Eaugh!" Cloud sputtered, scrunching up his nose in disgust. Slamming down his cup he sputtered, "How can anyone like this stuff!?!"

Zack laughed and slapped Cloud on the back. "How could anyone not? This isn't just any old form of alcohol, it's Gongagan sake, the best stuff there is!"

"You're just biased." Cloud grimaced as he took another cautions sip. It went down smoother this time, but he still couldn't suppress a shudder.

Zack shook his head bemusedly but didn't object. "Greenie," he teased. Lifting his own cup, he lightly tapped Cloud's. "Happy sixteenth! Cheers."

.040 sight

"Your eyes glow."

Zack paused and blinked, in the middle of taking off his shirt. "Well, yeah," he said, his voice slightly muffled as he resumed his task, pulling the shirt over his head. He futilely smoothed his hair back and looked at Cloud, who was perched on the end of the bed. "It's a side effect from the make treatment you get as a SOLDIER." Climbing on the bed himself, Zack asked, "You didn't know that?"

Cloud lay down and immediately curled up against Zack, savoring the warmth. "I did, but I guess I never really thought of it until now."

Zack laughed and trew an arm around Cloud's waist. "I guess it's more noticable at night, in the dark."

"Zack?" Cloud called out softly, all ready starting to drift off.

"Yeah?"

"I used to be afraid of the dark."

"Used to?"

"Mmm. I'm not anymore."
