I don't think that I can make a poll because I'm not a paid member, but I have had a question on my mind since my parents died. My dad always tried to get me to read Asimov's Foundation Triology/Qintology and I tried to get him to read The Lord of the Rings ( Read more... )

I think it was a product of growing up lonely and finding my best companions in books that I enjoyed both. I also read a lot, lot of science fiction of that era as well as fantasy so my tastes were probably much weirder than the average eight year old. (Which is around the age I was when reading both.)

Wow. I am totally impressed that you read them when you were 8. Especially Foundation because those first 3 pages never made a lick of sense to me and I tried to read it when I was in my early teens, late teens, and probably 20s and finally gave up.

I didn't know anything about LotR until The Hobbit cartoon aired on TV and then my HS friends and I started reading the series. I still can't imagine reading it at age 8 even if my dad had suggested it.

I loved reading, though, and science fiction and fantasy, but I had the problem of being pretty picky and rereading the stories over and over and over again. Until I had to purchase new copies.

I spent a lot of time in my head as a child (spacey) and read a lot, so I know that books can be good friends. I am sorry that you grew up lonely, though. My dad would have been the one to discuss books with - he was always reading the cool books.

Thank you for participating in my pseudo-poll. Happy Valentine's Day! <3

I read a lot of things very young that I've had to go back and re-read as an adult. Heinlein especially. I ripped through all his stuff as a kid and I read it now and go "oh dude. That's what that was all about." My parents literally could not keep up with my reading habits, so I ended up reading a lot of their books. My mother's friends from college would come over and we'd be reading the same stuff, which was sort of odd.

:D

I love them both, but I'm no real fan of the original Dune, make of that what you will.

Thank you for participating in my pseudo-poll!

Re Dune: I just thought that I might have some participants that liked Dune, but not Foundation or LotR, should have been represented. Of course, I've left out many more series, Dad and I just agreed on Dune.

I think I'm going to have to try the Foundation series again with the positive responses. The series stays on the bookshelves!

Happy Valentine's Day! <3

I loved both of them. I read Foundation in my teens and LOtR a bit later. (early twenties) I think I was a bit young for Foundation, but I was a precocious little (w)itch. While LotR gave me fantasies of ... Ahem! Yes. I loved both of them.

I think that I am going to keep the Foundation series on the bookshelf and giving it another try. There was something that kept me from reading it, but my dad really loved it and you do to. :)

Yes, I do believe that the LotR can make one rather fantasy prone.* I love Tolkien's vivid descriptions. I'm looking forward to The Hobbit movie.

Precocious is very good and I wanted to be Endora on Bewitched. Well I probably wanted to be Samantha then, but I want to be Endora now. Just like I would rather be Mrs. Howell than Ginger. What was I thinking then?

Thank you for taking part in my pseudo-poll!

Happy Valentine's Day! <3

*And after the movies extremely fantasy prone when I discovered fanfic, lol.
