Last night Ryan and I had a Wilde-a-thon, and watched An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest. I have An Ideal Husband (on VHS, but it will do), so we had to rent Earnest. First we went to Hollywood, but they didn't have a single copy of any version on any format, so I finally braved the mysterious waters of Scarecrow Video.
Scarecrow, for the uninformed, is an enormous independent video store mere blocks from my apartment. Their collection is huge, exhaustive, and complicated to browse. People used to say that the sections at Video To Go in Lansing were confusing, with the Cult section and British Comedy and such. Scarecrow has an entire section organized by director. They have a Literature room that is divided into playwrights, poets, etc. They have a blacksploitation room, a sexploitation room, and a psychotronic room. It is, in a word, intimidating.
I had meant to go there sometime when I wasn't busy and just wander around to familiarize myself with the layout, but I never did. After some confusion, we found the Oscar Wilde area of the Playwrights section in the Literature room. We flipped a coin over 2002 versus 1952 and 02 won. So it turned out to be a bit of a Rupert-Everett-a-thon as well, but you won't hear me complain. The man is simple exquisite.
We decided that a Wilde-a-thon should be somewhat decadent, so we went to the store and bought cake, chocolates, and fancy soda to be sipped from wine glasses. We enjoyed them thoroughly.
Oscar Wilde is just a god of the English language. Nearly every line in his plays is a little work of art, and comedy as well.
"I love talking about nothing, Father. It's the only thing I know anything about."
"That's a paradox, sir. I hate paradoxes."
"So do I, Father. Everyone one meets is a paradox nowadays. It makes society so obvious."
"Do you always understand what you say, sir?"
"Yes, if I listen attentively."
Hee.
