Getting old...er.

Sometimes I am taken aback by the fact that I am "old".

The other day, I had dinner with the wife's younger sister E (who is 22) and their two aunts. It struck me that the kiddo seemed quite bored with some of the topics we talked about. It's very telling that the wife and I have more in common with her aunts (who are in their 50s) than with the kiddo now, despite the fact that age-wise, we are closer to E. Does this officially make us grown-ups?

I recently officially joined the local figure skating club. The girls I train with are somewhere between 15 and 18, I think. For some reason, the fact that I am almost twice as old as some of them is hilarious to me. It's like: dude, that spiral I just did is kind of harder on my almost-30-years-old back than it is on yours. ;)

Oh and - our coach recently complained about being old. When we became friends on Facebook, I saw she's in fact 3 years my junior.

Also, upon being added to the group's secret Facebook group, I went and looked the girls up online (I'm curious like that). One of them is an avid Instagrammer. The skaters she follows? Artur Gachinsky, Florent Amodio, Javier Fernandez. I remember watching Gachinsky skate in an ice show in Russia when he was barely tall enough to reach to one's waist. Actually, watching figure skating these days in general makes me feel a little old, especially the men. I mean, I remember watching Denis Ten in Tallinn with reet when he was, what, 8? and competing in a junior event. Not winning international competitions, motherfucker. *laughs*
(I only follow Weir and Lambiel on Instagram, by the way.)

I am a member of the Harry/Draco shippers Facebook group and recently someone asked how long people have been shipping H/D... Most of them say "since 2010" or something. I've been in the fandom since 2002! Made me feel like a dinosaur. (Though secretly I think this is awesome. Those were the golden days, imho.)
Also, I watched the "Last Goodbye" song from The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies on YouTube the other day. And there's comments in which people mention watching the first LOTR movie when they were 7 years old. I was like: wait, what?!

I'm Facebook friends with my cousin's oldest daughter on Facebook. I remember meeting her for the first time - she was a tiny little baby! Now she's got a boyfriend and is starting high school next year!

It is particularly crazy because I still see myself as... well, as someone young and only about to start their life for real. And then sometimes I have to remind myself that, like it or not, somewhere along the way I've become an adult (kind of). And that the people I think of as "children" are on their way to becoming adults, too.

figure skating, life, h/d
