We have new chickies! And they are amazingly cute, of course.
And ... umm ... I was going to insert a picture here but it doesn't want to work and if I sit here and fight with it, it will be tomorrow before I go to bed. And I'm making a serious effort to get to bed before pumpkin-time these days ... So you can go to flickr for your
cute fix, if you're so inclined.
We weren't really intending to raise chicks, as we don't actually need any more, but the aunt of a couple of kids at JB's school (it's that kind of school) had acquired some eggs for her broody hen ... Sadly, said hen got bored and stopped being broody, so there she was with a batch of fertile eggs and no way to hatch them. And I happened to have a broody -- who has fostered two sets of chicks before -- so ...
There were eight eggs, until one of them got rolled out of the nest and stomped on by a heavy-footed chook (probably a sign that it wasn't healthy anyway). They started hatching yesterday, with three fluffballs by last night, and another two working on hatching. By this evening, we had six healthy wee chicks and the last one pretty close to finished. So hopefully we'll have seven out of seven by morning. Yay!
JB did not go to school today -- he didn't want to leave the house, in case of chick-related emergencies. (I do like that his school considers this a perfectly sensible reason to stay home.) He had rather too much screentime and was unpleasant about not being allowed more, leading to a renewal of our old rules about exactly how much screentime he gets per day. (We'll see how that goes.) In between he listened to Peter Pan and played with Lego, read endless books (judging from the pile on his bed), bounced on the trampoline, hung out on the monkey bars and periodically visited the chicks for Cute Time.
I ran in and out checking on the chooks every hour or so, washed dishes, cleaned the bathroom, baked bread and muffins and spice cookies, washed more dishes ... and one or two other things, but that's enough to be getting on with.
Now, bed. Tomorrow, chickies! And school. And maybe even some gardening ... And stuff like that.
[ETA: See
micheinnz? Photos. It did happen!]
