After a week of school, we are finally able to go sightseeing again. What better ways are there to explore the deep histories of Denmark than the castles themselves? This time, we had gone to the Rosenborg Castle which is rather near Norreport Station. It was built by King Christine IV in 1606-1634 as a summer castle. Much of the Dutch Renaissance style of the castle was designed by King Christine IV. The next three generations of kings lived here until king Frederik IV erected Frederiksberg castle in 1710. After that, Rosenborg was only used for occasional visits and certain official functions. It also became a sort of storehouse where royal family heirlooms were kept.
The castle certainly does not look as grand as Kronsborg Castle and is definitely not as big. However, the architecture of this castle is seriously grand. All the ceilings in the castles are filled with pictures and sculptures nicely designed. The tapestries covering the walls each have their own stories to tell. The items in this castle look much older than those in Kronsborg Castle. Every corner in the castle was filled with history and every item has its own story to tell. It is seriously amazing to see the items that have lived on long after their owners have passed on to the Netherlands. It is extremely unbelievable to think that we are stepping right on where the kings and queens had once lived; looking at the place where they slept, dined and talked and glimpsing into their everyday life. Everything is so magical and wonderful. I wished to know the story that each item has to share, I wished to know how life was like in the past and I also wished to find out exactly what had happened in the castle itself. However, there were no explanations to the items in the castles and we could only look, wonder and guess. Of course, there was a guidebook available for sale. However, I was not aware of it till I had finished exploring the castle and there was no point in getting it anymore as the guidebook only provided the number of the item and the explanations and there were no pictures at all.
Seeing the castles really made one feel that one had travelled through time. Walking through the many rooms and corridors and seeing paintings after paintings, it really makes one wonder how it is like to live like a royalty. The grandness of it is something we commoners would never understand. We can only look, feel and imagine the life of a royalty. Exploring the castles really make me understand why people wants to study history and why people wants to search for the past. I suppose history is a form of time travel by itself. I am really glad that I have come to this country of such strong culture and am able to view all these wonders by myself. :)
