Transgender Remembrance Day 2006

In memoriam...

Those who would be as they feel they are, not as society claims they ought to be, they are reviled and cast out. Those born men who are women, those born women who are men, and those who feel they cannot accept any category; they need to display greater courage every day than many of us need in a lifetime. Sometimes their courage causes others to murder them: why? Hate? Fear? Anger? Sometimes, the constant pressure put on them by others is too much, and they take their own lives.

As of October 20, 2001, 224 people were on record as having been murdered because of transgender prejudice. By November 16, 2002, the number had risen to 264. By November 15 of this year, the recorded total was 370. The list of names can be found at this website. Undoubtedly there are many, many more murders that go unrecorded, or are not known to have been caused by transgender prejudice.
