This morning I went to the funeral and cried for like two hours. Just as the people were entering the hall (near the start of the service), about four big bosses from St John walked in (wearing their uniform - hat and everything). My jaw just about dropped to the ground because I certainly wasn't expecting them to turn up to the funeral.
But then I remembered the kid is a cadet at St John so this shock of seeing top officers turn up kinda went away.
I think all of them saw me, one of them recognised me and came to talk to me, another thought she saw me (when she actually DID) but she wasn't sure that it was me and she was all: hmm... um... maybe... yes... um... no... yes?
It was very nice for them to come along for the ceremony, they didn't have to and they certainly weren't paid to do so. Nevertheless, since the kid was a cadet of St John (their future), they turned up quietly and slipped away quietly as well. I saw about six of them in uniform.
There were a few cops (not in uniform) standing outside the hall during the service. They were guarding probably - worried about reporters maybe? I think their service was also volunteer work too. =)
I got back around 2pm and we ate lunch and PenguinModel came over around 4pm to hang around until the St John dinner. Which is like woah because I had just been crying all morning and then I had to get into a dress and go celebrate the end of another St John year. =_= it's exhausting.
Initially, PenguinModel and I were going to do some of her badge work (because it's high time she got it done too) but things just didn't go in that direction and she ended up straightening my pretty much already straight hair. O___o
Manager was pretty late so we ended up late to the function and when I got there, I thanked our YAM for coming to the funeral and found out that she had actually sat with the family at the hospital on the night the accident happened and after that, she did some research and found out that the kid was one of our cadets and therefore, family of St John and continued to show her support and turn up at the funeral with a few others representing St John. So I thanked her again and she promised to pass it on to the others who turned up.
She's so great... she was one of the people who organised tonight's event as well and um... push my paperwork through really quickly. (I get the feeling quite a bit of force was used XD) but we're just not sure everything can be sent back up here from Wellington quick enough.
We went into the dining hall and got seated (and since we were late, we got separated) but the group we sat with was so fucking horrible. Half of us were ours and the other half were just such rude adults. SO TOTALLY NOT GOOD ROLE MODELS GODDAMNIT. Talking through speeches, serving themselves when it was not our tables turn and for the love of god - whistling at impossible and I'm almost sure illegal decibles. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK.
I'm pretty sure that guy was drunk, but his whistling was SO FUCKING LOUD that I actually thought my left eardrum burst or something. I sighed a sigh of relief when we realised our ears just popped and our hearing came back to us.
I also learnt that this really old man working for St John retired from paid service last Monday and then he returned to work on TUESDAY as a volunteer. <3 so he pretty much didn't retire as he's still doing the same jobs but just without money now.
OH AND LOL the buffet was like... a few tables of VEGETARIAN food. =D It wasn't until we reached the VERY END which was pretty far away that we found meat - three dishes. Chicken, beef and ham. And I just realised I forgot to take home a fucking menu. Damnit. RAWR. >_<
For desert we had fruit salad, apple crumble (really, really tiny squares! =D) and a real big slice of pavlova. Pavlova was SO DAMN SWEET. D= I ate like a pig and nearly threw it up but it was good. It was yum. I loved their potatoes - they were all so tiny! And their kumara was real nice too.
And last of all - we got a piece of chocolate that was customed made - it had the St John imprinted on the chocolate. XD
Now I have to memorise some economics then go to sleep - I have to go to Sylvia Park tomorrow for St John Awareness campaign or whatever. I'm apparently doing a demonstration. Also, St John is apparently giving away 10,000 FREE (!!!!!!!!) First Aid courses. I nearly fainted when I heard that number since it's usually $200 per head.
friends,
stjohn,
