Title: Two Sharks Learning How to Swim
Author: essenceofmeanin
Rating: Mature (Thematically dark, some sexuality.)
Word Count: 4,000
A/N: For roque_clasique -- I bet you thought you'd never get this. Dean with permanent mobility issues, GEDs, and Stanford. Oh -- and Sammy, too.

The details of the case never mattered, Sam decides later. Like how or who you lost your virginity to never matters. Just because you’ll remember it for the rest of your life doesn’t mean it means anything. )

OMG I love how I'm like, "mobility issues" and you're like "I'MA CUT HIS FEET OFF." Girl after my own heart :)

This is such a lovely, smart, clearheaded Sam POV -- his emotions are so understandably and unflinchingly drawn, and I love how the world is so different just based on Dean's accident. The cabin, the descriptions of place, Sam's tent, John's strange yo-yoing emotions -- and that scene in the basement, CRIPES, you killed me with that.

The end was absolutely gorgeous in a way that perfectly matched the quiet, heartbreaking tension of the fic. That last line... perfect, and so resonant in so many ways.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!!! It was waaaaaaay more than worth the wait... it's worth it's WEIGHT! In gold. Y'know.

ahahaha oh man, i'm so happy you liked this! i wanted to really craft something for you. and lol -- it didn't even occur to me to do less damage to dean than cutting off his feet, which, you're right, is sort of extreme. (my inner freight hopper just couldn't resist.) i'm sorry it took me so long to write your birthday story, but i had a great time doing it. <3 <3 <3 <3

Oof.

I'd comment, but you stabbed me through the heart and now I have no words.

I don't know why I love seeing permanently-impaired!Dean from Sam's POV so much, that crystal clarity he has about some things and all the murky emotions that come with trying to cope with such a huge change in all their lives.

thank you so much! and, um, sorry? hee. i definitely agree about this permanently!impaired dean business -- when roque gave me the request my first reaction was 'ummmmmmm.... hmmmm.' but as a writer it's a really interesting trope in that there's so MUCH change to explore. anyway, thank you for coming and reading!

Oh, man. This is just....
Hurts so much. Losing his legs did more than lose him hunting, he's lost his dad a bit, too, and that just...stings.

And his baby, lost her....
*sniffle*

Sam off in his lean-to, Dean gone, John elsewhere, all of them fractured apart and unhappy, fighting every day to just do what they have to do.

Dean, suspicious, when he comes home. “Where the fuck you go all the time?” he asks, knows full well he can’t ever follow Sam again.

Jayzus. That just rips my heart out. There's a little hope, at the end, them not quite at such terrible odds with each other but....

Excellent and hurty, bb, so excellent.
