Lesith peered down the stairwell before he yawned widely, bringing a hand up to cover his mouth.
"Ariny," he whined, "it was pr'obly someone else. Can we go back to bed?" Did she really have to drag him out for this?
She shushed and waved a hand at him. "He'll hear you!"
He rolled his eyes and took another sip from his can. They'd brought a lot of snacks outside her house with them, just in case, and they'd needed them. "He is not a xeno." Ariny had been telling him that for months, but this was the first time he'd stayed over at her house and she said she'd prove it to him.
"He is!" she hissed, glaring. "Mum said he is!"
"And if he really was a xeno, you'd been eaten ages ago!"
"Well…" Ariny frowned, crossing her arms. "Maybe he doesn't eat humans."
There was definitely someone coming up the stairs though, but Lesith couldn't hear any growling or anything weird. He peeked through the bars again and then craned his neck closer when he saw a hand -tanned skin, five fingers, no claws- trailing up the banister.
Lesith poked Ariny in the shoulder and then pointed down. She squinted and then looked confused.
"See? He's human!" he whispered.
A blond man came into view on the floor below and they skittered away from the edge, just in case he saw them. They stayed up for that?
The man stood in front of a door, a shopping bag in his hand, and then looked over his shoulder, smiling at someone. "Do you need help?"
Lesith couldn't stop the gasp that escaped his lips when the other person growled. It was a xeno! They were right above a xeno!
"Just - keys." The voice was deeper than anything Lesith had heard and it rumbled with every word. It wasn't human.
"I could have-"
"Injured." Lesith could hear an irritated sigh over his hammering heart. Xeni weren't supposed to be able to talk! They weren't supposed to- "Here."
Chuckling, the man stepped out of their view for a few seconds and then came back with a set of keys in his hand. The man hummed. "Maybe it would be good if I got my own key?" he asked as he opened the door.
"I'm not gonna be buying it," the xeno muttered.
"True." The man held the door open and Lesith stared as a - a - it looked like a dragon on two legs, with green scales and gold swirls all over, horns on its head and its wings were huge. Did it breathe fire too?
Lesith continued to stare until the door closed behind the dragon-xeno, his mouth hanging open.
That - was - no-one was going to believe he'd been that close to a xeno! And it talked. That wasn't… Did all xeni do that?
"What are you two doing out here!" Lesith whirled around to see Ariny's mum standing at the doorway. "Get in - you should be in bed!"
After scrambling to pick up what was left of the sweets, Lesith and Ariny shuffled back into her house, knowing they were in trouble.

"Marland? What's wrong?"
Marland eyed Shodin as he put some microwave packs in the fridge. "You didn't hear them?"
He got a confused look as a reply. "Who?"
Marland tilted his head down and pointed his ears towards Shodin. "The kids." He'd heard them as soon as the street door had closed behind them and the staircase carried sounds really well. Shodin had to have heard them.
"I… No? We were trying to remember the name of a tune that was stuck in our head."
They wouldn't have heard anything while they were distracted then. Shaking his head, Marland continued packing things away.
"What did they say?"
He grunted, one ear twitching down. "They didn't think I was a xeno." As for the rest of it... He'd gotten used to things like that a long time ago.
"Well, if they've never seen you..." There was teasing in his voice, but Shodin was studying him as well, waiting.
Marland shook his head, snorting. "It's good they've never seen me.
"Anyway," he said, nodding towards the TV, "isn't that show about to start?" It was...decent compared to the other stuff they had watched, but that really didn't say much - the characters still wandered around for a couple of episodes before something important showed up again.
"It is," Shodin replied mildly, "but we know the theme - ah, that was what the tune was."
Figured. "So... We gonna watch it?"
Shodin continued to watch him silently before he nodded slowly and started to pick something out to eat while watching the show.
Marland tried to not show too much relief at that. There wasn't much he could say if Shodin asked about it further - that was what most of the humans here thought of xeni and there wasn't anything he could do about it. The kids' reaction of disbelief was a lot better than what it could have been.
Fion materialised just then and started nosing around the remote control for the TV. It switched on, already on the right channel.
It didn't take long for Marland's food to finish heating up, but the atmosphere was a little quiet when he settled into a chair.
Until they spotted a horrendous plothole within the first five minutes and started making dry comments towards the TV as usual.

I am totally mixing up my messages between the Romance AU and the original verse. XDD;
Feels kinda ooc. Rewrote the ending a couple of times. I also didn't want to end the part on going to bed again. XD;;
I wanna go write something adorably cute for the Romance AU now... But I have no plotbunnies. :(
