Dramatis Personae
Cecil Shankel, a Child nearing Teen.
Buttercup Shankel, his mother.
Setting
The living room of Buttercup Shankel’s house. Buttercup is tending her plants as Cecil comes up to her.
CECIL: Mom, can I have a cat?
BUTTERCUP: No.
CECIL: But I’ll feed it and clean the cat box and get a flea collar for it.
BUTTERCUP: No.
CECIL: But I’d be really really good for the rest of my life! I’d eat all my vegetables and I’d do all my homework every night and I’d clean my room whenever you told me to.
BUTTERCUP: You’re already supposed to do all that. No. (relenting a little, as Cecil’s face falls) How about a dog? Don’t boys and dogs have a special bond?
CECIL (mulishly): I don’t want a dog. I want a cat. I don’t see why I can’t have a cat if I’m allowed to have a dog. And anyway, Cathrynne has four cats.
BUTTERCUP (losing patience): Then you better start spending time over at Cathrynne’s, because I hate those green-eyed little bastards. You can never tell what they’re thinking, but I’m always sure that it’s about me and it’s not very nice. No cats. (walks away)
CECIL (glowers after her, muttering to himself): Someday, I’m going to have a big house with lots of cats, and you won’t be invited over!
…Okay, so cats have green eyes, right? And Cecil is green with envy of Cathrynne’s four cats. And Buttercup has a green thumb. So it counts… right?
