You should hear Vengerov's CD of the Prokofiev Concerto no. 1/Shosty Concerto no. 1 on Telarc. Rostropovich is conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. This was the first time I heard Vengerov play, and I was totally floored by his musicality (and technique too!).

Every violinist knows Prokofiev's second violin concerto, but this recording really put the first on the map for me... I was totally in love with the piece at the age of 12, humming atonal lines and what not, and all because of Vengerov.

I also saw him live with the NY Phil last year... he played the Mendelssohn e minor Concerto. He gives off a totally different impression when playing live, unfortunately (for me, at least). He tends to sound fussy and likes to move A LOT. He also makes lots of facial grimaces which I find distracting. Anyways, he's still a great player.

Sergey Khachatryan, though, is really the one to watch, IMHO.

Glad to hear you are finally experiencing the essence of senior year! ;)

I'll have to check that CD out. Vengerov definitely has ALOT of facial twitches. The thing is, they seemed a little more heartfelt than other famous violinists like Joshua Bell. They just move all over the place with no logical reason, I think so at least.

When the face/eyebrow twitches get distracting, I minimize the video and listen to the music, because I liked his interpretation, haha.

One of his encore songs was the Bach Partita No. 2 Sarabande--I hated the way he played it. It was so choppy and bizzare. The second song he played was the Sonata No. 3 by Ysaye. That was really awesome and totally blew me away.

Perhaps I can burn you a copy sometime, if I can get a hold of a DVD burner. I think you'd be interested in it. :-)
