Gary Taubes gives a great talk on why the issue for overweight is not "energy balance" nor calorie counting nor fat intake but intake of sugar and simple carbohydrates. While I eat more fruit and yoghurt than he recommends and am not as thin as I would like to be, my waist is at least heading in the right direction from changing my eating habits in the direction he recommends.

I have also found that my mild blood sugar issues are much approved and my tastes have changed usefully. The vast array of lollies on display at service stations and desert trays in cafes become eminently resistable.
