The oddities of traffic

I drive over the Westgate bridge frequently. Since extra lanes opened, so it is now five lanes both ways, and after an extra lane was added to the Williamstown Rd city-bound on-ramp, with "feeder" lights at the top thereof, it has become much less congested ( Read more... )

I suspect its a combination of anxious drivers and people that think driving 20kph under the speed limit is both safer and uses less petrol.

They might be right on the petrol front - but it is still bad driving.

Having gone from a 2 hour (each way) commute some years ago to now where I walk to work, I can certainly appreciate the much lower stress levels that I now have.

Are they just too anxious? Do they have no sense of traffic? Do they think speed is the trump-all safety issue?

I have few comments about this.

Some drivers don't appreciate that traffic flow is a dynamic system.

Some drivers have under average reaction times and compensate by driving more slowly.

Some have so self-focused that they don't care about other cars.
