The oddities of traffic

I drive over the Westgate bridge frequently. Since extra lanes opened, so it is now five lanes both ways, and after an extra lane was added to the Williamstown Rd city-bound on-ramp, with "feeder" lights at the top thereof, it has become much less congested ( Read more... )

Hey, slow-ass driver here. So I can explain things as they pertain to myself.

Now firstly, I don't know if I'm the sort of driver you're talking about. If I'm not at the speed limit, I stay the hell in the left lane, because that is where the slow people are supposed to be.

But it cuts both ways. If I'm in the left lane and someone is riding my ass with a perfectly clear overtaking path to the right of me, I will take my foot off the accelerator just to fuck with them. Because I am in the slow lane. If you want to go faster, GTFO the slow lane. Your car comes with a steering wheel, make use of it.

Why do I drive slow in the first place? Because I am a crummy driver with a wimpy car and I am not in a hurry. At all. I will freely admit this.

The black art of maintaining a car at exactly the speed limit is something that eludes me and if I'm feeling tired I'd rather concentrate on not running into things than going as fast as possible. So I stay in the left lane and all the people in a hurry can just go around me. 20kph under the speed limit is not my sort of thing, I'm more in 5-10 under territory. 20kph under would mean I'm having a really bad day indeed.

This said, people who go slow on the on-ramps to freeways drive me bananas. That is one of the few times when I'll hit the accelerator hard because merging onto a freeway well below the speed limit is a great way to get yourself killed due to aforementioned lunatics who think doing 110 in the left lane is a terribly clever idea.
