American links

A map of the US by county by dominant ancestry. Notice the wide spread of German-American plurality counties.

Experiencing Sept 11 2001 as experiencing history. A photo from the next morning.

The minority Tory Government in Canada is doing quite well in the polls.

The new (37-year old) Governor of Louisiana was determined that there would be no Katrina repeats.

An amusing defence of tabloid media from within tabloid media.

Being crushed to find that the Obamas’ send their children to an expensive private school and the Palins’ to a local government one.

Obama is a much-travelled man: Obama’s youthful Pakistan connections.

A photographer takes a deliberately unflattering set of pictures of McCain, the Atlantic Monthly uses on one its cover and then gets embarrassed when the photographer brags on her blog about what she had done. About the behaviour of the photographer.

We had Obamamania, now we have Palinmania. About Gov. Palin and the media. The Palin rumour site is having trouble keeping up. How one particular smear worked. Smearing seems to have been the plan.

A textbook piece of insular, parochial condescension, getting the treatment it deserves. Getting the Bush Doctrine wrong. Exploring the Palin phenomenon: Conservatives, he said, prove quite adept at thinking like liberals, but liberals are consistently incapable of understanding the conservative point of view. “Liberals feel contempt for the conservative moral view, and that is very, very angering. Republicans are good at exploiting that anger,” he told me in a phone interview.
Perhaps that’s why the conservatives can so successfully get under liberals’ skin. And why liberals need to start working harder at breaking through the empathy barrier. Then there is dreaming about Gov. Palin. Some people take their politics waaayyy too seriously.

About the gap between Obama-the-speechmaker and Obama-the-politician. Obama may have embellished his resume a bit. Report that Obama attempted to delay agreement on withdrawing US troops from Iraq. [Or perhaps not.] It is perhaps not classy to attack a guy whose war injuries prevent him from using a keyboard (or comb his hair, or tie his shoes) for being unable to send an email.
