The Happening...

So yesterday Marissa asked if I wanted to see a movie on Friday. "Sure," I said, thinking I'd want a break from packing. Little did I know that with that one word I would be embarking on a grand adventure to seek out the elusive unsold movie ticket. First, we couldn't decide all afternoon which movie to see. Marissa wanted to see The Happening, but Feifei wouldn't go to it cuz it was Horror. She wanted to see Wanted, but it sounded like Marissa didn't want to see that so I suggested Wall-E. Pat was fine with both, and after hearing Bryan gush about how awesome it would be I started to actually want to see it. (Previously I was just a "meh") But then Marissa didn't think she wanted to see another animated movie since they all saw Kung Fu Panda last week. So all afternoon it was up in the air.

I left around 4 to get more boxes for packing...but Ralphs, Best Buy, and CVS were all out. I got a little bit more done before they were ready to leave from work, but Pat had left on an errand and we didn't know when or if he'd rejoin us. So we went to Century City for dinner figuring if he didn't join us, we could see Get Smart (it wasn't previously an option cuz he had seen it already). But at the last possible moment he called us back, so we decided to see Wall-E since it had the most convenient time. But it was sold out. Then we saw on the screen that it was playing in just 10 minutes! So we waited in line but found out it was also sold out. As was Wanted at all convenient times. Pat had joined us at this point. The decision was made to buy chocolates and visit the Mac store to use their internet and find a place to watch a movie. Michael (Marissa's bf) found "The Bridge" was playing Wanted, so off we rolled on quite a trek. Parking was horrendous...we kept climbing levels, finding no vacancies, getting honked at, curse words were cussed...finally we reached the rooftop...the last possible level...and we had already paid for parking...it was now, or never. Just as we turned a corner, there, shining like a beacon in the night, was a compact spot! It didn't matter that we were in a mini van...it was a SPOT! We claimed it as our own, our precious, and laughed at the poor souls who were swarming onto the rooftop after us.

The Bridge was very crowded, and when we found the theater, we waited in line...then Michael and Marissa disappeared...and we found out the movie was SOLD OUT and also cost $15! Sad and rejected, we meandered to a Subway so Pat could eat and we could recollect ourselves. We almost went to Marissa's to watch a movie, but someone discovered that The Happening was still going on, and not sold out! Our group, indecisive in nature, waffled for a few minutes, but it was by a chance pun on the phrase "happening" that suddenly made our feet turn back to the theater, where we found the box office selling decently priced tickets for students. The show wasn't until 10:30...and neither Marissa nor I wanted to stay up late, but after all the fuss we'd been through to see a movie, we decided there was no turning back!

I generally enjoy M. Night Shyamalan movies...so I told Feifei not to worry, that usually they are more suspenseful than "horror". Whoops! We were covering our eyes and cowering together throughout the film. I won't give spoilers, though it's not the kind of movie you really need to worry about spoilers...The director/writer himself calls it "the best B movie you'll ever see". And yea, I laughed more during this movie than an actual comedy...but it was definitely gross--don't see it if you don't like blood and watching people die. The worst part though is that they are killing themselves... there's just something sick and twisted about that, and it kinda bothered me. The film quality though was akin to "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock.

Oh man...it's 1...I have a lot of painting/packing to do tomorrow...I think I will let myself sleep in.

movies, friends
