...I am. I've become an indignant smoker.
NOW, to set the stage, I must qualify this statement. I do not smoke cigarettes. I actually rather dislike them, as they're horribly addictive and have killed many in my family either directly or indirectly. This is not about what I am ranting, however.
Yesterday, in my Comparative Social Policy class, the topic of SCHIP, or the States' Children Health Insurance Plan was brought up, as well as the new funding source, the Federal tobacco tax. I have no problem paying this tax, as tobacco, much like alcohol, is bad for you in excess. Again, not what I rage about.
What I rage about is a girl in my class whom I rather respected. She's pre-med, accepted into med school, and doing her major in political science. However, she refuses to accept that pipe smoking is not nearly on the level of cigarette smoking as far as carcinogenicity. Despite me citing the various studies published in the British Medical Journal. Essentially, refuting facts and science with her own personal beliefs.
So, I guess I'm not an indignant smoker, but rather an indignant follower of science? I don't have a problem with her disliking smoking, I have a problem with her refuting facts without evidence.
