For Matt, who had rarely hurried a day in his life, actually having to get somewhere quick was a challenge. He tried his best though, at least this time he did. In fact, it didn't take him too long to get to the train station and right here he'd told her to stay there was Maria - the little girl with the crown on her head.

A few more steps and he was walking up to her, giving her a small wave and a wary smile. He really didn't know how to deal with kids.

"Hey Maria. Sorry if I took too long."

Maria smiled and waved back, taking a few steps forward herself. Her shoes made a soft clicking noise on the concrete floor.
She kept on waving and smiling; trying to give a good impression. Maria, soon, found herself a few inches away from Matt, and also found herself looking up at him. She was rather short compared to him.

"Uuuu~! Hello Matt~
You didn't take long!" Maria smiled, cocking her head to the side.

She then walked a few steps closer and grabbed on to his hand. She smiled at him; this was fun.

To say Matt was shocked when Maria grabbed his hand and smiled was an understatement. First of all, usually the first thing kids learned was not to trust strangers and not go with strangers...but maybe this was the trusting innocence of a relatively normal kid which came with a childhood that wasn't warped with the ideology of a crazy orphanage.

Her hand was so little in his. For once, Matt felt protective of something other than his 360.

"So Maria," He began walking, taking her by the hand, not really used to holding someone's hand in the first place..."How old are you? Are you hungry?"

Two important things. First, because he needed to know just how young the girl he was taking with him was. Second, because children were usually hungry, and when they were hungry they'd cry. The last thing Matt wanted was a crying child on his hands ( ... )

Maria liked the feeling of Matt holding her hand, it made her feel somewhat secure and cared for. Really, she couldn't actually remember the last time that she had held her mothers hand; funnily enough, all the things she could remember about her mothers hand was when she used it to slap her.

"Uuu~, Maria is nine years old," Maria said, "and isn't particularly hungry right now, but Maria would like some sweets, if Matt doesn't mind~"

She smiled again, clasping hard on Matt's hand. Little did Maria know that when she got 'home' a very temperamental blond may or may not kick her right out again.

Did he mind? Nah. Why would he? Sweets sounded good even to him.

"Sure, why not." He winced a little when she squeezed his hand so tightly. Matt had to hand it to her, for a nine year old she had quite the grip.

There was a small candy shop not far from the train station he'd spotted on the way. Besides, the longer he delayed the trip home, the better. Guiding her in the direction of the shop they made it there in a few minutes. Pushing open the door it jingled a little bell.

"Now, I don't have much money on me," He started, hoping the shop wouldn't be too expensive, "But you can pick out three different types of sweets and get a few of each. Does that sound okay?"

Maria smiled once more and nodded before running off down the sweet aisle, her little shoes making that clicking noise again. She grabbed a lollipop from the shelf infront of her and a couple of toffee's, before digging her hand in a tray and grabbing a handfull of jelly babies.

Maria then turned to Matt and cocked her head to the side, a jelly baby falling from her hand onto the floor.
"Uuu~, Is this ok?" She said, gripping tight onto the sweets, trying not to let the rest of them have the same fate as that jelly baby.

"Ah-" He held out a hand as soon as he saw the candy in her hand, grabbing one of the small plastic bags from the side and holding it out for her to place it in. "Put them in here, okay Maria?"

He was glad the shop owners couldn't see them from this side. Matt was sure they wouldn't like Maria sticking her hand in the tray. Her little hand was so small there were barely any candies in the bag when she placed them in.

"Grab a few more, okay?" He handed the bag to her with a small smile before noticing the stack of chocolate bars off to his side. Snatching a few he held them at his side. It probably wouldn't help Mello's anger but...at least he couldn't say he hadn't tried.

Maria noticed Matt grab the chocolate bars from the shelf as she put her own sweets into the bag that he had given her.
"Does Matt like chocolate a lot?" Maria asked with a small grin, grabbing a few more jelly babies from the tray. She then shoved them into the bag without a second thought.

A second later, Maria handed the bag to Matt after, ready for him to pay for them.
"Maria will pay Matt back one day, Uuu~"

"It's okay Maria, think of it as a treat." Really. Having a nine year old little girl in his debt was just too weird. Taking the bag he moved over to the counter, placing the handful of chocolate bars and Maria's candy on it. Matt couldn't help but laugh nervously at her question though, handing the cashier the money for the sweets.

"Actually it's for a--" Just what was Mello? "A..friend. You'll probably meet him. He's very grumpy though, so I'd avoid him if I were you."

Maria followed Matt to the counter and stood patiently next to him, watching him intently. She felt so comfortable around him, funnily enough, seeing as really, he some man she had met just a few moments ago.

"Maria doesn't like grumpy people," She said quietly, "So Maria will try to avoid him, like Matt says."
She then started tapping her shoes on the floor, making a little tune as she waited. It would be a lie to say that Maria wasn't still upset about her mother, but with every passing second, Maria felt like life with Matt would be bright.

"That's a good idea." She was so agreeable. That made things so easy. Shooting her a tiny smile Matt handed her the little bag of candy. "I don't like them either."

Pushing open the door and holding it for her to slip past Matt fumbled around in his pocket looking for his cigarette box only to stop and let his hands drop. Right. It wasn't good to smoke around kids. Shit.

"The apartment isn't that great Maria, so I hope you won't mind."

Maria took the bag of candy with a small smile, holding it strongly in her grip. Taking out a toffee and popping it into her mouth, Maria brought her head up to look up at the sky above. It was nice out today, much better than the weather on Rokkenjima; all the storm clouds and squawking seagulls got tiring after a while.

"Maria will be happy as long as she's with Matt, so Maria doesn't mind what the apartment is like, Uuu~" Maria said, still looking at the sky.
She then slowly brought her head down to street level and looked at Matt, a quizzical look upon her face.
"What does Matt have in his pocket?"

That was...oddly touching in a way. Were actual normal children this...innocent and trusting? Matt sure as hell wouldn't have been happy or trusting of anyone when he was nine and he wasn't exactly very different now. But then again his childhood hadn't exactly been what normal kids experienced. Either way, it was sweet.

He'd started thinking about where they'd sleep and how to sooth the eventual rage he'd encounter from Mello but was distracted by her question.

"Ah oh...Um cigarettes. Don't ever start smoking okay, it's bad for you."

How hypocritical of him.

Maria carried on watching Matt. Her mind was pretty blank at this moment, she was just enjoying walking and talking, even if the conversation wasn't a very deep one.
"Matt can smoke if he likes. Maria's uncle does, so Maria know's not too." She smiled, taking out another toffee and popping it into her mouth.
She then held the bag out to Matt and shook it, as if to motion if Matt would like one.

That was...too cute. He took one of the candies with a small thanks and a smile, popping it in his mouth. Even though her uncle did it...Matt still felt like he was being a bad example. Then again, he wasn't exactly role model material. When had he actually cared so much?

"...Okay." More grateful than he'd show Matt swallowed the candy and shoved a cigarette between his lips. A few flicks of his lighter and the cancer stick was lit. It didn't take long before Matt was taking a deep drag, letting out the smoke with a sigh. Man he'd needed that ( ... )

Maria walked through the door quickly, eyes wide open, and when she arrived in the middle of the main room she span softly on her heel, taking in the whole scope of her surroundings. She smiled, her face lighting up.

It was nothing like the house that Maria lived in with her mother, no no. It was much smaller and compressed... but something about it was more warm and homely.
Maybe it was the fact it wasn't a massive, cold, empty house, or maybe it was the fact that someone would nearly always be home when Maria needed someone. Or was it jus-- No need for explainations.

She just felt so happy here, it felt so different, warm, and... She couldn't really put her finger on what it was, but it made her heart smile.

"Uuuu~!, Maria likes it here a lot~!" Maria exclaimed, spinning around again to face Matt.
