Music is a *huge* part of my life. Ever since I was a tiny blob of a baby, I have been exposed to music. My Mum and Dad would play The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Cliff Richard, The Human League, Wham! and loads more. I have memories associated with particular songs, some of which I really don't like now, and some which I have learned to love again.
Now I have my own music style. It mostly consists of old music, well at least not current. I still love The Beatles (the Love show in Vegas is amazing!). I've got a new love for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, with thanks to my husband. (I will add there that I have now seen Jersey Boys on stage twice. Once in San Francisco and once in London. It's very good :) ) I love Ryan Adams (not Bryan Adams) and everyone has probably heard something he's done, even if you don't realise it. His song 'Amy' is on the Mark Ronson album 'Version'. The original is much better, but still, you might have heard it! I like Hem - they're a folkish band from New York. I seen them a few times live, and they're excellent. The lead singer has the most wonderful husky voice. You can just put their music on and float away into a corn field. We walked down the aisle to one of their instrumental pieces. Radiohead are one of my firm favourites. I saw them for the first time in 1995, supporting REM. Blur were my first loves. Foo Fighters were the last band on my list of people I want to see live and I finally saw them last year at the 02 arena in London.
I can listen to a random bit of music and like it for itself, without particularly liking the band. And there are certain bands I will like that are completely out of genre for me. I love Mariah Carey, Zero 7, McFly, The Backstreet Boys, some Britney and I have an album called Chilled Ibiza (the first one, the rest weren't as good) which I love. I saw Faithless at Glastonbury and they were amazing - I wouldn't listen to their album though. They just created an atmosphere. I danced to Layo and Bushwaka there too. It was fun.
I love love love No Doubt, from their early stuff to now, and some of Gwen's solo stuff. I can't wait for their next album which apparently is back to their roots. I like to listen to 80's rock and ballads - think Heart and 10CC. Nothing like a good sing along. My favourite album of all time is Static and Silence by The Sundays. They are *awsome*.
I can't really listen to anything that's I would class as Starbucks or Dawson's Creek music. Makes me feel a little ill. And I have a negative physical reaction to Alanis Morrisette. No joke.
I play the guitar a bit and Love love love to sing. I tinkle on the piano but don't really make much sense. I leave that to my husband. He plays the music and I sing. There's nothing like a good jam.
In my past I have sang in 2 Gospel Choirs, co-led one of them. I sang at the Birmingham ICC, Campbell Park Multicultural Festival, The Royal Albert Hall and The Millennium Dome. At the latter two I sang the Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. That was fun! And I sang Karaoke at the Rat and Parrot once :) I like to sing. I was also part of a little informal band (we couldn't think of a name) that sang at a local pub, with my Brother in Law and his mate. It didn't last long, but it was fun while it lasted. I sang the songs that needed female vocals, and they played the music. The men in the pub appreciated it, so I guess I can't have done bad.
But the music changes and so do I. I go off artists for a while sometimes, if I've over loaded on them. I have a new liking for Amy Winehouse, and Lily Allen - though I seem to like Lily Allen herself more than her music. I like Leona Lewis, though trying to listen to her whole album all at once is a little trying. We'll see what's next.
