a little parental drama

Zach had a bit of an adventure last night. I'm not going to add specifics here, because I don't want to upset the people involved.

He got a tooth knocked out last night. Well, half of one came out last night, and the other half today. It was a baby tooth, and a new one is coming in below, no harm done for the long term.

I saw the blow, and I had to stay sitting and see what he did. He was wearing his mouth protector, but I could hear the loud 'snap', and then not much. When he got his mouth-guard out, but I could hear the quaver in his voice. Not crying but upset, and he did not run over to me. He just went to the bathroom, and after a decent interval, I followed him. He was spitting blood into the sink, not a bunch, but a steady amount, and not what I'm used to seeing my boy involved with.

Later, after bed, he came downstairs to give me half of the tooth, but he was much happier and I felt better about it. Dentist in the morning.

Morning came and he rode his bike to school. I picked him up midmorning (they took a long time to find him) and the Doc picked the other half of tooth out of his mouth, and said it was nothing to worry about. The appointment took less time than parking did.

I don't like to see my boy to cower and cry, but I don't need him to play the tough guy for me. He has rough hobbies, and I guess I knew this stuff would be coming my way at some point. I don't want him to never get hit, but I don't want him to be missing half his teeth before high school. I worry that this kind of thing will blunt his enthusiasm or make him gun-shy, but I haven't noticed any change in his spirit or attitude. I have both pieces of the tooth on my desk, but it was not a pleasant thing for me.

I was more curious about my own responses and feelings, so please don't speculate on the what or who.

postscript: The ladies at the school office really move it if you show them a broken tooth.
