Title: Blue for Betrayal
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG-13
Characters: River, Jayne
Pairing: Not exactly
Disclaimer: Joss owns all.
Summary: Blue is not Jayne's color. Darkish River-fic. Spoilers for "Ariel" and hints at Serenity. For Firefly Friday Challenge #116, "Blue Sun". Double drabble, 200 words without the title.
Feedback: Would be lovely, as this is my first posted Firefly fic.

Blue for Betrayal

It's always there if you look for it.

It's in her head, in her dreams, in her gut like sickness. Carved into her brain, and sometimes she claws at her scalp to tear it out. The hands that went everywhere, two by two, left their mark, blue like a bruise. She's branded, she's a brand, a commodity, an asset. A weapon. Made for a purpose.

She looks at Jayne, and he's wearing it, right out there in the open for everyone to see. Everybody sees; nobody sees it. Why are they so blind?

The knife in her hand feels right. Purposeful. When the blade rips through the logo, through his shirt, his skin, she feels pain shudder through her own chest. The same, but not the same...

He looks at her, and he can see her. Not the girl she was but what they've made of her. It's there for everyone to see, and she knows he wants to send her back. Blue for betrayal. But he only wears it on the outside. He's still a man. It doesn't go all the way to the bone.

"You look better in red," she tells him. But he can't hear her yet.
