Quick note in regard to LJ policy decisions

Aug 04, 2007 12:50

Recent suspensions on LJ are making a lot of people nervous and upset, and it's looking to me like LJ's not the best place for fannish archiving/activity anymore. fabu has posted a more in-depth summary of the situation with handy links. I'm not leaving this minute, and I'm not particularly worried that my content is putting me at risk for suspension ( Read more... )

Are you using a programme to transfer content from this comm- and if so, which one? I've backed up everything from penways using LJArchive, but I couldn't figure out if I could transfer anything other than my personal journal using LJSec, and I'd really like to be able to transfer my fannish stuff without having to manually copy stuff out.

I don't know...haven't had time to try it yet...

That would kind of suck if LJSec doesn't transfer community postings.

I'll add you both places! I have a free JF account, so I can't get you one - but they're giving 'em away like mad here, so I'd try that.

Thanks for that info--I got an account and I'm "erinya" over there as well. I love my weird username. :-)

Friended you on both, just in case everyone decides to leave lj. I'm having the same issue with journalfen. I've got to find someone with invites.

Oh, I hope you don't leave! I enjoy your work, and I think people are over-reacting big-time. Will you still post your fics to fanfiction.net at least?

We'll see what happens. My concern is the way LJ has chosen to deal with the situation at hand...deleting not only objectionable posts, but permanently suspending all journals belonging to the posters, without warning (which means those people have lost any material they haven't backed up.) Also, they seem to be specifically targeting HP fandom for reasons I can't quite fathom. There's other ways they could have gone about this, and they've chosen the worst way.

Yes, I see your point. I was rather dismayed at the deletion of ponderosa121's journal. While I don't personally like anything slashy or smutty or anything like that, she had some good stuff, like this one picture of Jack and Barbossa fighting unseen enemies -- it was called Gaining Ground. I had it saved to my memories, and now it's gone. :(

However, if they're just trying to ban underage smut, then that seems okay to me. But yeah, maybe they could deal with it better -- just delete the inappropriate stuff. *sigh* I don't know.

And what's up with the going after HP fandom right after the new book came out? I don't follow HP, so it doesn't really affect me, except that so many HP fans are also PotC fans.

My guess is that increased visibility of HP = more attention from weird "morality" groups = outside pressure on LJ = LJ worried about losing sponsors, etc. Since LJ has grown increasingly corporate after being bought out by 6Apart, the company's best interests are no longer fandom's best interests.

The art that Ponderosa was suspended for isn't to my taste either, but like you, I've enjoyed her PotC art and I don't like the fact that she's been banished from LJ with no warning. Another big problem I see is that LJ refuses to give solid guidelines for what is and isn't acceptable. And the staff keeps making promises and assurances and then going right ahead and doing what they've promised they haven't. And now one of their employees commonly posts on the LJ news blog (and has posted previously about the content issues) has has publicly mocked those concerns and equated fans with pedophiles. It's just becoming clear that LJ is Not Our Friend, that whoever is making their policies doesn't respect or understand fandom, and that in ( ... )
