The third years are currently working on introducing me to Japanese items, festivals, sports, and foods. The two sentences they have to use are “This is called a _______. It is used when you _______.”
I had to read a couple of examples to the students in 3-2. Here is one of the examples I had to read: “This is called a katana. It was used when people fought. If you have one now you will be…” I burst out laughing and it was a loud laugh, more of a cackle. I had to sit down I was laughing so hard.
The rest of the introduction went like this, "...you will be arrested. Katana is made of iron.” Of all the words and things I expected to read the verb “be arrested” was not one of them. The students could not figure out why I was laughing. Once I read the “be arrested” Tsukune Sensei started to laugh also. Tsukune Sensei translated it into Japanese and then the students started to laugh.
I bonded with one girl in 3-2. The girl got a kick out of my katana laugh and she showed me that she had pictures from her trip to Kyoto, after class I stopped by her desk to go through them. After class two of the third year students greeted me with a huge “HELLO ERIN!” The students are slowly starting to loosen up around me.
