Did you know that Mardi Gras in Alabama is a segregated event? I saw a documentary about it last night on PBS. There is a black parade and a white parade. The only way a black person can participate at the white mardi gras is if they are in a marching band or dancing. You can't even stand on the side and watch and catch necklaces. There is a white king and queen of the white mardi gras and a black king and queen for the black mardi gras. The documentary showed the first integration of the black and white coronations, in which the kings and queens made an appearance at the other's party.
It's 2009! What?! I was very surprised. I suppose living in the Northwest all my life makes me unaware of things. Did anyone else know about the segregated parades?
