TOP DOLLIE NODS TO FIREFLY AND ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT
2005 a Serials Year, Davis Academy Voters Agree
February 14, 2006 (DAVIS) -- The members of the
Davis Academy of Home and Leisure released their
nominations for the Fifth Annual Dollie Awards
today, recognizing exceptional events and
activities of 2005 from twenty-plus different
categories including movies, television, music,
restaurants, and the "Dollie Pardon," an award
given to something that the voting members would
rather forgive and forget.
The recently-cancelled Fox television series
"Arrested Development" received nominations in
three out of five technical categories, the Best
(Entertaining) Series category, and is a contender
for the coveted Dollie Llama award, given to the
nominee with the most votes overall. Another series
cancelled by Fox and making an excellent Dollies
showing this year is the sci-fi Western "Firefly,"
also up for a Dollie Llama as well as receiving
nominations for Best (Entertaining) Series, Best
(Engaging) Series, and Best Performance(s).
The Academy seems to appreciate Johnny Cash more
every year, as this time the iconic singer received
two nominations for Best Music. The President of the
Academy and his wife (who were unavailable for
further comment on the matter), somehow received
three different nominations for Best Outing events.
And, while J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series again
received two nominations in the Best Book category,
Terry Pratchett also picked up two mentions for his
books "Thud" and "Where's My Cow?".
In the feature film categories, Peter Jackson's Lord
of the Rings: The Return of the King again secured
enough votes to be considered for the Dollie Llama,
but somehow received only a single nomination. Both
the French-subtitled Amelie, winner of three Dollies
for 2002, and the Disney fantasy film Chronicles of
Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
received three nods. Last year's darling, Pixar's
animated superheros of The Incredibles, again
garnered three technical awards nominations and also
has a shot at the 2005 Llama.
Because the votes are ranked, it is possible for a
nominee to receive a great many votes but no
nomination in any appropriate category. This year,
the cult film Napoleon Dynamite received no Best
Feature or technical award nominations, yet still
the members of the Academy voted for it often enough
to earn it a Dollie Llama nomination.
Nominees for the fifth annual Dollies, organized
by the Davis Academy of Home and Leisure, were
officially announced Tuesday, February 14, 2006. The
Dollie winners will be revealed on March 11, 2006.
