I'm incredibly stressed about deadlines. I have to write about 20,000 words in the next week, and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do it. Part of it is the creativity, coming up with enough interesting things to fill up all the pages, but most of it is the actual time it takes to write that many words. Organizing my thoughts is difficult. I've been doing a lot of reading on the subject, so that I can write with confidence, but still it's a tricky thing writing gaming supplements, because you not only have to have a neat idea, but you have to communicate it in a way that makes it easy to use. As much as I admire the art of storytelling, there has to be some crunch to it as well. Normally I'm very good at that, and my outlines already take that into account, so now I'm just trying to focus on the narrative aspects.
Several friends of mine are participating in
National Novel Writing Month, where they write a 50,000 word novel in one month. One of them complained that that's more than 1,500 words a day! I sympathize, believe me. The bits of the book that I'm working on now are more like a novel than a game supplement, so I feel a close kinship with these folks, though I cannot join them in their ordeal because of my prior commitment. Go to it, keep at it, good wordcrafters all! The best way to become a better writer is to write! Right?
