Went out to throw some hucks today. I started thinking of a bunch of different things, but mostly the experience is making me wonder, how much has my throw changed since I first started throwing forehand.
I still remember the first time I saw someone throw a forehand, and I knew what it was. It was some guy I used to dislike in 8th grade because I thought he was too nerdy, and I remember him being really white. He was all about the split finger flick, 'make a peace sign' he told me. That was senor year of high school. I don't remember having a flick then, but I know I must have had one.
Later at DVC I started searching out more pick up. Again, it's pretty blurry but at some point I must have switched to the double finger flick. At this point I doubt I had a forehand huck. In fact, I remember being quite in awe of a guy who could launch it full field. Only thing was, he couldn't throw backhand.
Finally somehow when I came to Davis I knew how to throw both throws. I have zero recollection of how I was throwing my flick then but I do remember being fairly confident in the fall when I first arrived. I know I wasn't breaking marks, but I definitely had a flick with a two finger solid grip. That fall, I spent about three hours a day on the quad. Bad for grades, good for throws. Unfortunately, I spent a lot of the time just goofing around. To this day I think my 'lazy I don't care throws' are still more accurate than my game throws, on account of all that practice I was getting.
In particular, for improving my flick I paid extra close attention to copying the motions of some awesome throwing frisbee hippie who lives in Davis, and the motions of my coach. The two motions were quite different but both were quite effective for their respective users. One guy pulled back, and launched straight through. The other circled the arm over and into the throw. Nowadays I find myself throwing the second motion in more circumstances. However, when I take the time to pay extra close attention and perfect my throw. I always go back to a motion more akin to the hippie, a motion much closer to pulling straight through. I'm pretty much settled on this one motion, even if it isn't the one I catch myself throwing more often.
