*UPDATE*

so here is a little update. nothing too crazy, just last night i had to complain to get it out of my system.
my teacher from maxwell that loves me to death emailed me about those teaching jobs open next year. and then i emailed my resume to my teacher at gwinnett tech and low and behold he sent out my resume this morning and i got a call from a company ( a company that is close by and that we took a tour of so i know a little bit about, but not sure if thats what i want to do or not)
so you know how i have never been able to explain how i could become a drafting teacher without getting a teaching degree? this email from my teacher will explain it (becuase i never really knew myself...)

Eric, this is one of them, the one at Marietta High School. I'll send you the others separately.

Subject Job Opening - Marietta High School - Engineering, Drawing, and Design

Good Afternoon Mr. Cannon,

Please help us spread the word that we will be looking for a new Engineering, Drawing, and Design teacher for next year (2006–2007) at Marietta High School.  We installed a new lab in November.  Our current teacher (Gene Cambardella, who has done a GREAT job, and we wish we could keep longer) has maintained the lab well and has also enhanced the lab further by use of his wood-working skills.

At this point, we do not know whether it will be a full-time or half-time position. Â

If you know of anyone who would be interested, please send them our way! Â Also, please have them contact me directly. Â Our system website is: Â www.marietta-city.k12.ga.us

Instructions for applying online are listed under the “Jobs” tab.

We will further be looking for a ½ time DCT instructor for next year.

As always, thank you so much for your help. Â I hope to see you soon,

Tim

Another school is Stockbridge High School in Henry County. The teacher there is Rex Winn at 770-474-8747. He is debating leaving, based a lot on whether he can get a good replacement. So it is best to call Rex directly rather than his supervisor.

Here's the deal on getting certified without a degree in education. You get a 3-year provisional certificate to complete certain requirements. Trade and Industry teachers, (that is what these positions are called at the high school level) go to a class called New Teachers Institute, either through Valdosta State or Georgia State. This is what I used to teach at GSU. This is about like 4 or 5 weeks in the summer. If you were to be hired now, you would go this summer; if hired in the fall, the summer following. Then you do a 2-semester internship through one of those universities. All the internships are are a series of meetings or classes during that school year, and the instructor comes to school once a semester to observe. Somewhere along the line you have to have some sort of class for teaching spec ed, but it can be done locally for no cost. Anyway, when you finish whatever the requirements are, you get a regular T certificate.

For the technical schools, it's my understanding that you don't have to do any traditional certification work, only take so many hours of training each year through the school itself, something everyone would do. Jeff Fitzpatrick at Gwinnett Tech at jfitzpatrick@gwinnetttech.edu and Office (678) 226-6665 called me week before last looking for an adjunct person to teach CAD for the interior design program there. I sent him your email address then. But there are two other tech school jobs, part-time(right now) at DeKalb Tech at Clarkston teaching CAD. That woman's name is Natalie Costas at 404-514-4539. The other is the DeKalb campus at Covington, which believe or not, is not as far as you think. There's back growing out from Loganville. Anyway, they want to start a program there. Call Consuelo Godden at 770-786-9522 x 3316 goddenc@dekalbtech.edu if you're interested. Consuelo is a good friend of mine and probably would be your supervisor there.

In general, high school jobs are 10-month contracts (190 days) and tech are 12-month (generally 210 to 220 days). Both Henry County and Marietta City are high-paying school systems, as are tech schools for full-time positions. Adjunct generally doesn't pay great.

That's all I know for the time. I'll let you know anything else I find out. Call with any questions and I'll see you at Maxwell on the 28th.

so yea. i am kind of intrieged (sp?) on the thought of maybe becoming a teacher. great benefits, decent pay, summers and christmas off....
i don't know what to think about it. what is your thoughts? i don't know if i would be good at teaching. i mean i know i would, its just wow, a lot to think about. post if you got this far or have any input on what you think. id be interesting in knowing what other people think id be good at doing.
