Fic: Go Do

Just playing around with a thought I have had since watching the movie Up in the Air.  Contains some spoilers if you haven't seen it, but it revolves mostly around Natalie's assertion that she should give women a try

Ryan had been right.

The words stuck to her tongue a bit when they first erupted from her lips, like sludge or something. No not sludge, maybe more like too much toothpaste. A bit unpleasant tasting, but once that faded there was a nice minty aftertaste. Yea, definitely more like toothpaste.

Ryan had been right and like everyone else in the world, Natalie gave up her high school dreams of the perfect man. She would include Alex in it, but Natalie still kept in touch with Ryan and while the older man held no anger towards the woman, Natalie found she wasn’t so forgiving. Alex and her words could shove it as far as Natalie was concerned. Ryan had chuckled a little when she’d told him as much, but remained resolute in his lack of anger. What that relationship had been was important regardless of the end result. He refused to let it become twisted by dwelling on anger or betrayal.

Natalie didn’t understand what he meant. He said she would, when she was older. The knee jerk desire to defend her age was never voiced because he was probably right. He had been about how eventually she’d give up her search for the ideal husband.

The perfect man, the guy who wanted kids and loved his golden retriever, who loved the outdoors and maybe had a bit of stubble, one day just no longer mattered. She wasn’t exactly certain the date. It was probably shortly after she arrived in San Francisco.

It stung, when she realized she had given the man of her dreams up. Not the loss of the imagined man, but the loss of her childhood dreams. It stung like being dumped over a text or catching her knee on the corner of a coffee table. Painful, yes, but once it faded it was gone.

Because in the end there was no perfect man. In the end there had been a girl that lived in the apartment next door. A girl with a mutt and an adorable smile who loved kids and liked to drag her on hikes.

Ryan had been right and she really liked the minty aftertaste.

This is more of a note to myself, I just really like this song.
