As John Scalzi so eloquently put it.
Karl isn't here to celebrate. He and Lydia left for California yesterday morning. She is staying with relatives in Chico, where she will feed the chickens, play with the dog, hang out with some buddies she's made in the neighborhood, and go target shooting with her cousin. Karl will retrieve her on the 28th and take her to San Francisco airport, put her on a plane home, and go back to working with his colleagues from the bay area and Australia until July 2nd. We'll have our Father's Day party then.
Yesterday I helped wouldyoueva shop for a house. (We go back to 1974, when she lived in the same dorm as my boyfriend.) Her older son has finished his masters degree and moved to an apartment with his girlfriend, her younger son is going to start community college in the fall, and the place they've been living is up for sale, so it's time to move. After we looked at houses, we had lunch and talked over what we'd seen, finally settling on a place about 3/4 of a mile from my house. I hope it works out, because having her as a neighbor would be so cool!
Today I helped another friend pack to move to a new apartment. It seems like recently my social life has revolved around helping other people do stuff! Several women I know have formed what we call the Ladies' Home Improvement Society. Every month we meet at someone's house to do a big job that's made easier with help. So far we've painted a basement hall and stairway for hourglasscreate, installed baseboards in my master bathroom, assembled book cases and sorted and alphabetized books, and helped wouldyoueva sort and pack. Tentatively scheduled for next month is ripping up an ancient kitchen floor. We always get a lot accomplished and have a great time doing it because we talk and laugh the whole time.
We've had torrential rains this month. By Friday the area had received almost twice the normal rainfall for all of June! None of the plants I bought at the plant sale in May are in the ground; every nice day I've either had a headache or needed to do things with higher priority. And most of the plants can't be planted until I weed the places they're supposed to go. I'm hoping for at least one day this week when both the headache gods and the sun smile on me!
Thursday was the last day of school, and to celebrate we went to our local dinner theater to see "Oklahoma!" As usual, the food was mediocre and the show great. But this time was really spectacular: the casting was perfect, the actors did an amazing job of conveying the deep emotions of the script, and the singing was superlative! I want to see it again before it closes in September, but I don't think our schedule allows it. Next up is "Sweeney Todd" and we're definitely looking forward to that.
Tomorrow is doctor and dentist calls, grocery shopping for stuff on sale and stuff to eat when the leftovers are gone, and the neverending paperwork. And Worldcon trip planning; I need a vacation!
