Home on the range

The weather this year has been very good for flower gardening, especially irises. I've planted a lot over the years, but many have never bloomed. This year I counted 19 varieties! The day lilies are doing well, too, and most of my perennials seem happy. The only things that aren't going gangbusters are some hostas I planted last year; maybe they're getting too much sun in their location or maybe the soil there isn't right for them. I'll give them another year and then move them if they haven't improved.

Karl planted a couple of cherry tomato plants in old tree buckets and put them in front of the garage, the only real sunny spot we have. (We've abandoned the raised beds on the north side of the house because the trees got too big and now the shade is too deep for vegetables.) One plant already had tomatoes a week ago and the other is not far behind. I bought two of the topsy-turvey tomato planters at Safeway ("As seen on TV!" but at half the price) and one of them is up and had a plant in it. Unfortunately, the plant didn't survive the first attempt at keeping the pole upright. We'll try again. It's the American way.
