I heard an interesting little factoid this morning on the radio. Southwest and JetBlue are slowing their planes to save fuel. They are adding a couple of minutes to their flights, lowering the average airspeed by a few miles per hour, and achieving significant savings. Well, they sounded significant to me, but I don't have to pay JetBlue's Exxon card bill.
I applaud their initiative, and responsibility, and I hope that, if gas prices drop precipitously, they stick with the plan and stay on the low end of the speed/mpg sweet spot. There may be some people who really need the extra 3 minutes, but I am finding it hard to ramp up any sympathy for them.
