Local Explosion Kills 5, leave more homeless

Feb 11, 2011 12:26

Things got entirely too exciting around here Wednesday night when an explosion blasted part of Allentown. It literally blew 2/5 of a residential block apart and left the other in such a state that it'll have to be torn down.

Our local paper has more frightful details than the link; including a comment by one eyewitness who remembers being told, "My Lord, look at that!" He looked and saw someone moving around inside one of the burning homes, literally inside the flames, right before they collapsed. God grant it was over quickly for them, whoever they were.

The local newspaper account is also kinda disheartening, in that everyone offical that they spoke too is doing the "Ain't my fault!" song-and-dance routine before all else, save for a local politician who basically said that gee, if he'd been elected this would never have happened. That and our mayor was off in Florida for most of the winter rather than back home. Glad to know that he's earning that paycheck. Sorry, but all that has left me somewhat steamed.

The local churches and Red Cross are helping the survivors out, and things seem settled for the moment.

Take care all.
