Hi all -- just want to recommend one of my very favorite SF writers to you all. Micah De Alarcon/Hogarth from many, many very fine stories in old copies of Yarf! and Pawprints, two late and yet lamented magazines.
A lot of her fine old work has been lost, but she's recently been republishing it on Smashwords, right here:
http://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/mcahogarth Several of the stories are free, and the ones that aren't can be bought in a multitude of formats for prices ranging from $.99 to $3.99. Really, she makes alien societies and races that actually feel alien while still being very comprehensible. Even her 'furries' come off as ever so slightly 'different' when compared to more generic work. And her use of description is wonderful; I have to study her work to see how I can improve with that. She also has a deft hand at characterization. 'Poomah' ought to be publishing pro.
My sole complaint is that there's no art with the stories -- her artwork is wonderfulnand compliments her work perfectly.
Just get some of her free samples; you'll want to return for more.
And now if we can only get Watts Martin's stuff for sale on there...!
PS -- Ken, Heavy, have you considered trying out some of your stuff through Smashwords? Even if you just did a few works, it'd be some exposure and even a little money!
Best all
