I posted this idea elsewere, and was surprised to see how many people like it. Maybe some of you here can give me some input on what you think of it:
Something I've long wanted to do with high fantasy elves/Fair Folk was to use them in a story along with humans and the classic mindlessly violent and destructive orcs. And I also want to use the old idea of the Teind, or "Tithe" (a tithe to Hell, paid by the Fair Folk for whatever reason, usually done with human infants and children).
It would be basically as follows:
Humans are fighting the orcs with 'help' from the elves. The elves are snatching their kids somehow or other and shipping them off to Hell (or whatever Powers of Darkness [TM} you wish to use).
Orcs, for their part, seem to have no origin or families even culture beyond "kill everyone else". Someone finally tries to figure out what's going on and learns that this is what's been happening to humanity's lost children for a thousand years -- the get taken to Hell, are tortured and warped into orcs, and then get sent back to commit mayhem on humans.
So the elves have been keeping the humans under control for a millenium by getting them to slaughter their own children.
Good basic idea or not?
