There are more
pictures up from our trip. They're mostly just generic tourist pictures; we are not fancy camera people. But they look awesome anyway.
On Monday we walked up to St. Stephen's Cathedral. It's huge and old. The outsides had mostly turned black with grime, but apparently they are washing it this year (or maybe it takes several years), so parts of it were bright white stone. Inside there was the main chamber, plus a ton of little side-churches inside. I guess each wealthy family got to commission its own chapel off to one side of the main area. I hadn't known that. We rode the elevator up to the top of one of the side towers. Got some good shots of the city.
Afterwards we walked through one of the palace parks, then headed over by the Rathaus (the old parliament building). It turns out all nearly all the buildings are huge and old. There are also statues everywhere we go. Lots of them are people we've never heard of, but there are a ton of musicians. I got a shot of Schubert. My parents got some good ones of this giant bronze Mozart.
Later that evening we went to the State Opera House to see Tosca. That is an amazing show, and the opera house is just gorgeous. The performers were absolutely world-class. Best opera I've ever seen. Got some shots of us all dressed up too.
On Tuesday (day 3) we went to see the Lippizanner stallions (my mom loves them). The oldest ones are completely white. On the way back we went by St. Michael's Cathedral, which was much different than St. Stephen's, it was quiet and much more impressive. Later in the afternoon we took the trolly out to the Belvedere museum. They have Gustav Klimpt's "The Kiss" on display on the second floor. Outstanding. There was a WWII exhibit going on at the time which was all in german, so we didn't get the full experience of that. But the paintings were amazing, and the building was beautiful.
By the end of the museum we were pretty much wiped out. We'd been walking for nearly three days straight and our legs were falling off. We went back to the hotel, took a nap, and then went out for asian food at a restaurant called "Eat". Love that englisch. Then we crashed in our hotel and caught up with Twin Peaks on the laptop in bed.
