Happy birthday for tomorrow if I don't get around to saying it! (and bah, time differences and all that).
Although, I think, Crowe may be just a bit higher on my list than Bale.
OMG, TAKE IT BACCCCKKKKK.
I do have a fair reason though. I don't like Russell Crowe. I think he is a very talented man, and I loved him in A Beautiful Mind, but I think every New Zealander is programmed to hate him. Because when he is an idiot and hits people with telephones, he is called a New Zealander (BECAUSE HE WAS ACTUALLY BORN IN NEW ZEALAND... BAAHHH, HE WASN'T BORN IN AUSTRALIA LIKE EVERYONE THINKS!), and when he is all wonderful and acting, and winning awards he is Australian. It really gets on my nerves. Plus he is known to have a temper problem (see aforementioned HITTING someone with a hotel telephone, among other things). Yea. All this doesn't take away from the fact that he is very TALENTED, and I suppose talented people have a little more prerogative to be highly strung, who knows? But Bale is way better because he's been famous since he
( ... )
Eeeeep. I only think he'd be higher on my list because I've known him longer and have always liked him. Christian I only just recently started becoming fonder of. I never heard of Russel hitting someone with a telephone and now I'm slightly freaked out by it. o_o; I know plenty of people who reference him as Australian. -sigh- You've put a whole new light on Russel for me.
I actually did think Christian and Joseph were a bit alike in that sense. I love actors who don't seek out the limelight and take on this career because they love it.
ACK! I didn't mean to spoil you! -shame- I didn't think my review was very coherent but it is true that I couldn't find much fault with it. In every department of the movies it seemed to prevail. I was very happy to see Alan in the movie, too, as I adore him and don't think he gets nearly enough love as he should. Hopefully you can see it soon!
LOL, it amuses me that you've known Russell Crowe for longer, even though Bale has been doing films for almost twice as long. Tehe. Probably since before you were born! (Empire of the Sun was made in 1987!) Oh well, I suppose Crowe is in the limelight a lot.
Yea, if you read Wikipedia, Crowe was born in Wellington, NZ (same as me), and left when he was four for Australia, but came back at 14 and stayed until he was 21. He is also the cousin of two former New Zealand cricket captains. He has a lot of ties here. I don't mind him being called Australian - he probably considers himself that, I don't know. I just get annoyed that people tend to remove us from the equation altogether just because NZ "might as well be Australia" even though we are nothing alike. We suffer from chronic little brother syndrome so we hate ties with Australia because of it, even though they'd not done anything to us, it is just the rest of the world. LOL.
Oh, don't worry about spoilers. Westerns are pretty similar - lots of people die. I got my copy of 3.10 to
( ... )
It has to do with Russel being more in the limelight probably but the first movie I ever saw him in was A Midsummer Night's Dream but had no idea who he was. When I first noticed him it was in Batman Begins and I just saw Newsies last year so I'm late in his work. Plus my mom's a big fan of Russel's so I was influenced by her too.
I'm not even from NZ and I'm miffed when people associate the two! NZ and Australia are two completely different countries, despite how my history book also has them joined at the hip. I suppose it's just because people consider Australia more well-known or popular or whatever word you'd like to call. I dunno, but they most certainly are not the same country.
Friends on LJ are life-savers. :D Glad you're not irked by the spoilers. But, as you said, westerns are pretty predictable. From the previews I was able to tell Russel or Christian would die so it wasn't too much of a surprise. I think I was most shocked and upset by Alan's character's death!
Of the Bale movies you mentioned, I've only see Batman Begins - not Newsies, or Midsummer's Nights Dream (I remember it when it came out, but never saw it and for the life of me can't find a copy now!). I've got Newsies now and I plan to watch it after 3.10 to Yuma. Russell Crowe, for all my complaints has done some great work - I've mentioned before, but I loved him in A Beautiful Mind. I don't really care for him in much else, but I can't deny he is a great actor. I think it is just his personal life that puts me off him - any time he does something dumb, the NZ papers make a big deal of it because of his ties to the country. There is a whole section on his "temperament" on his Wiki entry!
And by the way, happy birthday?!?!!! Is today the right day? I get confused with the time zones!!
I'm glad that most people on LJ know the vast difference between Australia and NZ. I've often found LJ people are much smarter than people I actually encountered day-to-day. No wonder I'm so addicted and love it here. Intelligent people!
I would mail you my copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream if you wouldn't mind waiting but I'm not sure you want to do that. I don't have an emotional attachment or anything so I'd be willing. XD I think it is a movie worth checking out of his - he's absolutely adorable in it. Plus there are some other actors to look out for in it. I can't wait to hear what you think of Newsies and 3:10 to Yuma. I've never really paid any mind to Russel's personal life (or heard much about it) so I had only seen him in movies and respected him off that. As I said, though, I hold him in a different light now.
It was yesterday but you're excused because of timezones! :D Thanks, though, it does mean a lot. I love it here.
Intelligent people who will also squee! There's a reason we have an LJ and nothing else.
Oh, no you don't need to send your copy all that way! I'm sure I will be able to download a copy somewhere, I just haven't looked yet! Plus I'm almost out of bandwidth for the month. But thank you for the offer - very kind!
I don't mean to put you off Russell at all - just that he tends to be more famous here for his antics than his films, even when it should be vice versa. At least you are only hearing the good stuff - the way it should be. I think he's settled down a lot of late anyway.
Well, I hope you had a fantastic birthday yesterday :D
Mkay. The offer's still there if nothing comes your way (though I hope it does)! :D
I wouldn't say you put me off exactly, but just made me aware of what he has done. He does seem to have settled down though - the last I really paid attention to him was in an interview with Nicole Kidman last year or so. He seemed to be doing well. I agree that he shouldn't be more known from his antics more and for me, I'll always respect his acting and try not to think of his sometimes reckless behavior. Goodness knows there are many respectable actors/actresses out there who have done things they regret.
I don't like it when actor's personal lives get in the way of their acting. I can't watch Angelina Jolie because I can't see her as a character, only as her persona. And Colin Farrell - I mean, the guy is a good actor, but all I can think about when watching him is the image he presents to the media. I want an actor to get me involved in the character.
I know we've mentioned it before but I am still so glad that I'm not alone in not being able to watch Angeline Jolie (which is one of the reasons I'm slightly turned off by Wanted). Plus her roles always seem so synonymous (save for A Mighty Heart).
I haven't seen Colin Farrel but I completely understand where you're coming from. He was quite good in my eyes in The New World but he has that life where it's all you can think of when he's on screen.
Yea, we've had the convo about Jolie before. The trailer for Wanted does look very different, but she's playing a similar sort of character. Strong, rebel woman ala Gone in 60 Seconds. James looks amazing though - I can't wait to see him in an action role.
I can't say I'd watch a film for Colin Farrell, but I wouldn't avoid one either. He is a good actor, but again, the personal stuff does prevent me from getting 100% engaged in the story because I'm always like "oh, that Colin Farrell". Plus he was in what I thought was one of the worst movies of all time: Alexander.
Although, I think, Crowe may be just a bit higher on my list than Bale.
