USA for beginners or The BBC's trip across America

Oct 18, 2008 12:03

I promised myself and my readers here not to get involved into US politics until after the elections. Vote what you want and live with the consequences. In the meantime, I'm busy selling Sarah-Palin-Voodoo-Dolls.

So, if the elections are mentioned here then it's because they just happen to take place. The BBC's Jon Kelly travelled across the USA and talked to people from all ways of life. I really enjoyed his blog; it's so difficult to understand a country as huge and complex as the USA if I find I already find it hard at times to understand this small handkerchief of soil I call home.

If you're interested, you can read Jon's blog here:

TALKING AMERICA

Today was the last entry, and there were links back to older ones. So I ended up with Ed Bogovich again, a democrat who's been the first racist in ages who made me laugh.

Why? Well...

"(..) Sitting in front of a 1920s Ford Roadster, however, was 72-year-old retired engineer Ed Bogovich. He'd come through from Pennsylvania - another blue-collar swing state - to attend the show.

Ed had backed Hillary, too. But there was no way he would support Obama; no way he would support any black man for the presidency.

"I don't want him to be my leader," Ed barked. "I am a staunch Democrat, but I will not vote for a negro.

"If his grandfather is a Muslim, wouldn't be one too?"

It was shocking to listen to all this. But it was no use correcting Ed that Senator Obama was, in fact, a Christian.

"Come on, don't tell me that," he replied. "It's in his heritage." (..)"

Dear Ed

Should you ever happen to read this: PLEASE come to Switzerland. Please! I invite you! Come here and apply for a job, apply for housing with a name like BOGOVICH - and you'll get a taste of your own medicine. I can promise you that there are tons of people here who wouldn't give a flying fuck for your US passport, because they think that anybody with a name like Bogovich must be some drug dealer from Albania, and even if you're not, that criminality must be in your heritage.

Which is about as moronic as your own views, but Gods, wouldn't that be some valuable lesson for you!

A friendly middle-finger from Switzerland,

Erestor
