Home improvement! :-)

I found myself confronted with yet another "too many books, not enough space" problem. As I've placed lineae's wonderful miniatures in the glass cabinet above my desk, I had to find a new place for some of my navy-related books. Not the novels; the research- and reference-books and biographies. I need them all the time for my writing, so they have to be somewhere close by.

I found a solution, which cost me little to nothing and who knows, maybe you'll like the idea!

A month ago, the old lady living in the flat opposite mine died. Her family put some bits and pieces of furniture they couldn't sell out for anybody to take who might like them. Among those things was a large and really heavy mirror with a solid frame. I'd say it was made in the late 20ies or early 30ies; the mirror itself is silver-glassed, very lovely.

The wooden back of the mirror was rotten, the hangers rusty, so one couldn't have put it on the wall anymore without replacing the back. Also, it's much too heavy for the walls in my flat to carry, plus I don't need another mirror.

But it was perfect for another purpose:

I removed the back, cleaned everything and polished the frame. Then I glued and nailed a plate to the back of the mirror, and placed it as a plate on the two red drawer units from IKEA. It's so heavy it holds without any additional fixing, and so the printer and the books found a new home. The wood of the frame is almost the same colour as the pictureframe above (with lineae's illustrations of my book!), and I think it all turned out very nicely. Plus the mirror gives such a lovely effect with the light; those old silver-glassed mirrors have a light blue tint to them, and when I light a candle, the effect is spectacular.

The picture is not very good, but it will give you an idea. And yes, I have a garden gnome in my living room! :-D

Perfect for those of us who live on a tight budget, and I could also imagine it would make a nice table.
