New LOTR movie sets plus documentary

Times are a changing - two years ago, the fandom would have buzzed with this news:

Three "The Lord of the Rings Limited Edition" sets, one for each movie, will roll out August 29. Each two-disc set will include the original theatrical and the extended versions of the film, along with Costa Botes' feature-length documentary on each film's creation.".

Nowadays, it doesn't really seem to be of great interest. However, the movies are not the truly interesting bit (we all have them at home by now, anyway), it's the documentaries. From all I heard from people who've seen them (or run twice through the picture) they must be really, really good. Don't expect a "movie about the movie", prepare for documentaries. It will be something for the fanatics and geeks among us.

So that's a good thing. I just really don't like that bit:

""New Line has owned these documentaries and waited to make them available to the general public," Lasorsa said. "The style of these documentaries is quite different from the documentaries on the extended-edition DVDs. These are more organic, and had they come out sooner people might have been confused."

Bullshit. You didn't want to bring them out sooner so you could cash in some more later on.

"While first-time buyers might be intrigued by the two versions of the film, ardent "Rings" fans who already own the two previous DVD releases might be enticed to buy a third just for the documentaries.

"It gives us the chance to refresh the franchise," Lasorsa said.

See above.

One of my biggest complaints regarding the LOTR movies is that the real movie was not shown at the cinema, but you had to buy it on DVD. Just look at Return of the King - it borders butchery what has been done to the version shown at the cinema!

And now we're expected to buy the whole stuff again to get the documentary. Money makes the world go round, hm? Well, who knows - in 2011, when the supahdupahmegabombasticallinclusive collectors set comes out, including all the neverbeforeseenfootagefoundunderpeterjacksonsbed features, they *might* be able to pay the guys whose faces were used on the decipher cards some money.

Anyway. I know I will be a dork and buy at least the set for "The Two Towers", as I'm one of the 0.0001% of the fans who love that part the best. And for the hardcore Elf extra fans (who probably don't frequent this LJ) the three sets are a must. If I'm not completely mistaken, a good number of them, including "Figwit" ("Melpomaen" in fandomese) Bret McKenzie can be seen more than the half a second in the original movie.

I don't think this will "refresh the franchise", though, the documentary would have probably made more money if it had been sold separately. I also don't expect "new folks" getting into the fandom. But we shall see.
