The rantings of a bitter asian

Jan 23, 2010 13:32

While flipping through channels last night, I stumbled on at least 8 stations showing the telethon raising money for Haitian relief. Great! I don't want this rant to be misconstrued into a, "Who the eff cares about Haiti?" rant. It's not. People are dying, without food, water, and homes. My stomach turns when I see pictures of the earthquake's aftermath.

That being said, I was almost... angry whenever some music artist got all teary while singing an uplifting song, with images of the suffering people showing in the background. Last September, Typhoon Ondoy struck the Philippines leaving more than 80% the capital city of Manila underwater. I paced in front of the television for hours while I got sporadic updates from my mother of friends who were unaccounted for and family being rescued off of rooftops from the flooding. Friends and family were dying and suffering. Philippine president, Arroyo, still has yet to answer where our country's money is. Outside of the Red Cross, aid to the Philippines has been minimal.

And what about the earthquake in Indonesia that hit shortly after Ondoy hit Manila? Or the Tsunami that hit Samoa? Or when Ketsana and Parma hit China and Vietnam? Small blips on the news for no more than a few days. Are the people of South Pacific Asia less precious and important than the people of Haiti? I'm feeling a pretty huge inferiority complex.
