IN THE BEGINNING

"Daddy! Daddy! DAAAAAA!!"

The Darkness looked up from his writing just in time to catch a lapful of Cloey. She was bouncing around, waving her cupped hands frantically.

"Look what I found, you have to look! You have to!!"Like a good father, he held Cloey still until he could capture her small hands with his own. As soon as she opened them, a ( Read more... )

His ever-effeminate son was huddled on their bed. Cowering under his wings. And had Erebos seen Nyxie's cosmetics on his face?

The Darkness had been overjoyed when Nyx bore Death to him. He had not expected Thanatos to be so... so.... pretty.

And he certainly had not expected Thanatos to be in their bed. Erebos was already reaching up to brace Nyx with his other hand hen she told him to put her down. Clearly his plans for his Night were ill-fated. Gently setting Nyxie on her feet, he greeted Thanatos.

"Son."

Despite his reservations about Thanatos, Death was still his son. And family was everything. Regardless of how pretty. Erebos folded his wife's hand over his own arm, then walked her to the bed, making certain she was comfortable before he circled around the bed to the other side and seated himself there. Quietly, he patted the winged one on the back.

Mommy was looking! She was awake! Hypnos didn’t play his trick like he thought. Daddy and Mommy must have been playing, maybe wrestling like Moros and Momos did. Moros would carry Momos around like that before he threw him down on his back. Oh dear! Oh dear!

And then it came into his mind that Moros may have shared the terrible tale that was told to him, Hypnos and Lethe. She must not have wanted her feet to touch the ground because of the monsters---There were these terrible twiggy root monsters that sprung up from the ground when you weren’t watching your step and would grab hold of your feet and not let go and so you would be stuck in place and grow into a tree. Ever since Moros told him those things he had been careful not to let his feet touch the ground even if they would turn to dust he didn’t want to risk it.

His wings relaxed when his parents sat down on each side of him, “Hello mommy. Hello daddy! I tried to draw you a picture. See!”

He held up a handful of ash and smiled.

Nyx cast Erebos an affectionate, sloe-eyed smile when he set her on the bed, with the briefest flash of a promise of a rain check before turning her attention to Thanatos. She smiled widely at her little boy, and pulled him into her arms, trying to be cautious with his ash "drawing" even as it crumbled. Thanatos was, indeed, pretty - beautiful, in fact - and Nyx was completely nonplussed by his use of her cosmetics. She saw it as an outlet for his creativity and encouraged it as such. Normally, she would have discouraged the use of her things for such an endeavor, but she was hard-pressed to discourage Thanatos from anything.

"That's a beautiful picture, my little Than. And you look lovely, my handsome boy," she said as she kissed, then nuzzled, his cheek and wrapped her arms around him, careful of his wings. "Is that why you've come to visit, my little love? To show us your picture?"

He heard his wife clearly, though she did not speak a word. It improved his mood considerably.

Looking at the picture his wife and son made, a peaceful, satisfied smile settled on his features. Being a father suited Erebos well, in these days. He affectionately ruffled Thanatos' dark hair.

Death may well have not been what Erebos had expected, but damn if he wasn't still ... precious... to Erebos.

His eyes found the rocks. What were these?

He picked them up, turned them over, then looked to Thanatos again, wondering what his son was up to this time.

Thanatos was relieved that mommy and daddy weren't rocks.

Folding his wings behind him, he leaned back in mommy's arms, immediately satiated by her affectionate kiss and being in the safety of her warm embrace.

She couldn't do that as a rock.

Moros and Styx=fibbers.

Daddy was ruffling his hair. He always liked when daddy did that. Moros would always say things he didn't like about daddy. But he didn't care cause he knew it wasn't true.

He looked from the picture in his hand and tipped his head back to look at Nyx, "Thank you mommy. You pretty too."

He looked troubled while trying to formulate the answer to mommy's question and shook his head.

"No. I came to put you both to bed." his eyes darted toward the rocks in Erebos' hands.

Nyx's smile widened at her little son's politeness and sincere compliment. He was a little gentleman, her little Than. A sweet, charming little gentleman. She gave him a little squeeze.

"Thank you, my little love," she said sincerely. However, her pleasure was slightly blunted by his next statement.

"Put us to bed? That's very sweet, little Ending..." Her midnight eyes followed Thanatos', and a quizzical brow shot up as she followed through threads to realize just what young Death was talking about.

Her frown was hidden as she kissed his forehead.

Nyx adored Styx and Moros infinitely, but their tendency to pick on their younger siblings was one by which she was sometimes troubled. Now, it downright annoyed her - though she was careful not to let Than know.

"Were Moros and Styx playing tricks on you, love?"

Thanatos was here to put them to bed? Death? Would that not be more reasonable coming from Hypnos? And why did Thanatos turn his eyes to the stones when his son said that?

Nyx was speaking, so he did not interrupt, but what a strange thing to hear from his gentle son's mouth. There were things that they needed to know in order to understand what it was that Thanatos was talking about, and Erebos left it up to Nyx to discover these things. Talking was her strong point; it never had been his.

There was nothing particularly special about the rocks Thanatos left on their bed. He set them down, then edged over to his wife and son. Closer was always better. He drew Nyx into his arms and laid his hands lightly on Death's shoulders.

Moros and Styx. That would explain it. Styx would not be so bad, if it weren't for the corrupting influence of that big brother of hers. Moros was always causing trouble. For everyone. He frowned, thankful that his wife and son did not see it.

Mommy was always giving him smoochies...it made him feel something. That something? ...love?

"I was by Styxies, Hypnos and me playing hide and seek. Hypnos ran off to hide and while I was lookin for him I asked Mo-rose, Momos, and Styxie if they wanted to play with us. They were throwing rocks in Styxie's wattles and I asked Styxie if it hurt. She said no and I asked her if it hurt the rocks. Momos (mocked)asked Styxie the same thing I asked and Mo-rose told him to shut-up. Mo-rose picked up two rocks and told me they were you. Momos was laughing at him. I told him he was a fibber, but Styxie said it was so. I wasn't sure but Mo-rose threatened to throw you in Styxie's wattles. You'd be lost if you fell in because Styxie's wattles are too deep for me too swim."

Nyx leaned up to kiss Erebos' cheek before settling into his arms, and cuddling Thanatos closer to her. Her little son's voice and manner of speaking was infinitely endearing to her, trying hard not to frown as he recounted Styx and Moros' behavior.

She resisted the urge to cast a look back at Erebos, though she did think exclusively to him,

I do not like this, Ere. Surely they could have traumatized him! He's so little, why must they pick on him?

Nyx was distressed, though her face didn't show it. She simply snuggled Than, and kissed his cheek, and said,

"Moros and Styxie can sometimes be fibbers, which is Not Very Nice at all, but you'll have to ignore it a little, my little love."

Since I'm starting to fear that this kind of thing is in both their natures."But you needn't ever worry that Mummy and Daddy won't be here, or that we're rocks or anything else like that, my sweet boy, because we'll always be somewhere. Da can be found almost anywhere, and I'm never more than a few hours or a thought away ( ... )

"At any time," Erebos reiterated to Thanatos gently (or..as gently as Erebos got). "For any reason. All you have to do is call on us. We are family. And Family means everything."

Squeezing his wife tight, he answered her silently.
Yes. They have some darkness in them, do they not? I will speak with... Styx. You should speak to Moros. He listens better to you.

Thanatos cupped a small pallid hand over his mommy’s hand feeling a slight twinge of what was that?…something similar to how he felt when his bigger brother and sister tried making him believe mommy and daddy were rocks.

Mommy kissed his cheek and confirmed that Moros and Styxie were fibbers. He was telling them so when he next saw them.

He looked up into mommy’s pretty pretty eyes and repeated looking from her to his daddy: “Quicker than I can think? That is fast.”

He’d show Moros and Styxie next time they fibbed he’d call mom and dad.

There was a tiny bit of a grin in Nyx's mental voice as she thought to Erebos:

Are you sure you don't want to talk to Moros, beasty? I would be more than happy to speak with Styx - I wouldn't want to deprive you the opportunity to speak with your son...

Nyx smiled down at Than and kissed his forehead once more.

"It is fast, isn't it, my little love? But that's how fast we will be."

"Faster then the floo of Styxie's wettles," he modestly exclaimed! Mommy and daddy sure could move fast if they could move that fast. He hoped he could move that fast one day.

He smiled up at his daddy wide-eyed, "Not even of the mon-sters?"

Nyx settled closer to Erebos, and turned her head to the side and up to kiss his jaw. She knew that her husband didn't hate Moros - that he loved him, in fact - and it was just that fact that kept the topic from being sacrosanct. Overall, it had to be expected that certain tensions would exist between some of their children and either or both of them. The personalities in their family were so widely varied that conflict, even between a few of the children and Erebos or Nyx, was practically inevitable ( ... )
