As soon as she entered his room, she knew there was something terribly wrong. Kira was in bed, under a pile of blankets but he was still shivering uncontrollably. Rushing to his side, she laid a hand his forehead, immediately she pulled back. He was burning up! Without losing a moment, Soifon rushed out the door to wake Kira's Vice-captain. Yamada Hanataro was formerly of squad four, surely he could do something to help with Kira's fever. Soifon herself would then go get Captain Unohaha. After all, she was the fastest person in Seireitei save for Yoruichi-sama.
Busy and distracted Soifon missed Kira's mumbled words, "Don't... leave..." he whispered, but alas, Soifon had already rushed out of the room, leaving Kira utterly alone.
"What's the matter with you Hanako?" wondered Yachiru, "You look so depressed! What happened?"
Under normal circumstances Hanataro would have protested, fruitlessly as always, Yachiru's insistence on calling him Hanako - a girl's name. But today, today he simply asked, "Vice-captain Kuchiki, did you know that Captain Kira and Captain Soifon were together?"
"Sure! I mean it's not a secret is it? I mean they don't go shouting it from the roof-tops, mostly because of their clans, but they aren't exactly hiding it. I mean, they live together for crying out loud!" she pointed out.
"Have they... have they been together long?" asked Hanataro.
Yachiru was genuinly surprised at the question, "They have been together for the last twenty-five years. They got together about the same time as me and Bya-kun. Izurun started channeling some of Foxy's assertiveness and started kissing Soi-chan every chance he got," she laughed as she added, "Soi-chan was convinced its because Izurun insists on wearing Foxy's old hoari. She was convinced it still had Foxy's spirit haunting it and that said spirit was possessing Izurun!"
"Captain Kira wears Captain Ichimaru's old haori?" repeated Hanataro, shocked.
"Yeah, we found it Heuco Mundo when it was raided and brought it back. Grampa let Izurun have it after Foxy's death," she never said the word execution in relation to Ichimaru Gin, "Didn't you notice it's a little too long for him?"
Hanataro sighed, "I knew I wasn't as close to the captain as other Vice-captains are to theirs. I knew the captain kept me at arms length, but only last night did I realised how little I know about him. I didn't know he was with Captain Soifon. I only found out when Captain Soifon kicked me awake at midnight last night and told me to look after Captain Kira while she went and got Captain Unohana. The captain... the captain had told me to finish up the work we had left and just went to his room. I noticed he wasn't looking well but I didn't think much of it. I just thought that maybe he was a little sick but that if he needed healing or something, then he would call me. When the call never came I assumed that he must be feeling better."
"I was wrong. I should have gone into his room to check on him. But..." Hanataro sighed again, "The captain is so cold, I just can't even think about going into his room. But if Captain Soifon hadn't decided to come visit the captain... the captain might well have been in a very serious condition. I got yelled at for an hour by Captain Soifon. She demanded to know what kind of a third rate Vice-captain doesn't notice that his captain is delirious with fever in his room. She even cast doubt on my abilities as a healer in front of Captain Unohana, who said nothing in my defence, which means that my actions were without defence. The look of disappointment on Captain Unohana's face was worse then Captain Soifon's yelling," the pain in Hanataro's voice was raw and bare.
"Now, Captain Kira is being looked after by Captain Soifon at their house," Hanataro hung his head in shame, "I knew the captain didn't spend every night in the barracks and figured he must have a house somewhere in Seireitei but..." he closed his eyes in pain, "I am suppose to report there tomorrow but I don't even know where it is! Captain Soifon wouldn't even let me help carry his stretcher! She got Vice-captain Omaeda and Isane-san to do it."
Yachiru patted his head sympathetically, "Izurun and Soi-chan live in Izurun's ancestral house near the Shinigami Academy. A path that hugs the right wall of the Academy leads to the house. You can't really miss the house, the name of the Kira clan is over the gate. But if you do get lost, just asks for directions to the manor of the Kira clan from the locals. They all know it. Indeed most of the locals are related to Izurun and are very proud of Izurun. He's the first Captain from the Kira clan! He was also the first to rise to the rank of Vice-captain. He's the pride of his clan."
"Thank you," said Hanataro sincerely, "I guess I really am a worthless vice-captain. I know nothing about the captain. Nothing at all. I don't even know when his birthday is."
"March 27th," answered Yachiru, "And for the record, his favourite food is agar-agar and he hates hoshigaki but eats a hoshigaki on the 10th and 29th of September in memory of Foxy and Ran-chan, since both of them loved hoshigaki. Anything else you want to know?"
Hanataro just looked more mortified at Yachiru's revelations, "I didn't know any of that, does everybody know more about my Captain then I do?"
"It's not you Hanako," Yachiru assured him, "It really isn't. Unless you count Soi-chan, and you really shouldn't because she is a special case, Izurun hasn't made a single new friend since Foxy's death. In fact he even stopped being friends with Momo-chan after Foxy's death because Momo-chan hated Foxy. I have known him for a very long time and I also liked Foxy. It's only natural that I know things about Izurun you don't."
"But... he's my captain," protested Hanataro.
Yachiru smiled sympathetically at Hanataro, "Izurun was very close to Foxy. Closer then most Vice-captain's are to their captain. Izurun loved Foxy. Loved Foxy despite all Foxy's flaws, despite seeing all of Foxy's flaws clearly. He nearly broke after Foxy died. He keeps you at arms length because he doesn't want you to get hurt like he did. I mean, only reason he let Soi-chan get so close is because Soi-chan is so strong that she wouldn't break easily. Plus out of all the people in Seireitei, she is the only one who can really understand even part of what he has gone through. I mean for a hundred years Soi-chan did think her beloved captain and mentor, the great Yoruichi goddess of flash, was a traitor whom she had to hunt down and kill on sight."
Thanks to Yachiru's directions, Hanataro found the Kira's house without issue. When he got there he was let in by an old servant, "I am glad you got the message," the man said to Hanataro, "It has been a long time since Captain Kira has been sick and the last time he was, he stayed at the barracks. But of course, back then the master didn't have Captain Soifon."
"Were you the one who sent me the message then?" asked Hanataro.
The man nodded, "I was the one who sent the hell butterfly. Why? Was there something wrong with it?" he wondered.
"No, not really," said Hanataro, "Just... just it didn't give directions to the house..." he trailed off, perhaps he shouldn't have said anything. It really did sound kind of stupid when he said it out loud like that.
Clearly the man thought so too, smiling a mocking smile he said, "My apologies. I simply assumed that even if you did not know the address of the house, you would be able to find it by tracing Captain Kira's reitsu."
Now Hanataro really was feeling like an idiot. Why hadn't he thought about tracing Captain Kira's reitsu! Not for the first time he wondered what he was doing being a Vice-captain. He had been brimming with confidence when he had accepted the appointment. Happy to serve under Captain Kira Izuru, who had once been a member of squad four as well. But barely a year into his service, he regretted ever sitting the vice-captain's exam. Captain Kira was terribly cold, he never smiled, not around Hanataro at any rate. He always gave of a gloomy aure and never spoke except to issue orders and set tasks. That there was a very, very different side to Captain Kira Izuru, Hanataro knew very well.
Captain Abarai, Vice-captain Yachiru and little Shunsui were particularly good at bringing out a more cheerful side of Captain Kira. He also displayed a level of comfort around Captain Hisagi and Vice-captain Iba that made Hanataro green with envy. As he walked into his captain's garden to find Kira reclined on a large hammock-type swing and resting his head on Soifon's lap, smiling contentedly as she stroked his hair and hummed softly, he felt a surge of pure and unreasonably jealousy. Why was it that everybody but him got to feel the warmer side of his captain?
Author's note: For those how have not read my story the "Truth Behind the Smile", little Shunsui is the son of Ichimaru Gin and Matsumot Rangiku. He was adopted by Kyoraku Shunsui and named after him. Ichimaru was of course executed, which you will recall from chapter one - traumatised Kira, and Rangiku died due to complications from her pregnancy and child birth. Little Shunsui looks exactly like Chibi Gin and has a twin sister, little Rangiku - who looks exactly like Matsumoto Rangiku. Nanao didn't tell the children who there father was (and pretty much forced other people to go along with her) and it was believed that both the children just assumed that Kyoraku was their birth father. But little Shunsui eventually figured out who is father was and Kira is the only person little Shunsui told about figured out that he's the son of Ichimaru Gin. This is kind of important because part of the story does revolve around Nanao being not very nice to Kira because she afraid of his influence on little Shunsui and little Rangiku.
