We seem to be getting a lot of hints about Dean wanting that apple pie, wife and kids life.

That's interesting, I never got that impression. I thought the question in this ep was another reason of checking in with how Sam was (kind of like he did in "Sex and Violence" when he asked Sam if he wanted to say good-bye to his fling). Are you thinking about other eps this season though?

My guess is that Kripke won't have Dean fall into a torrid love affair of his own accord. I would be very, very surprised. The love spell is a possibility, but it feels unlikely for this series. It's just a feeling though, so I have no concrete evidence otherwise. That would be a very disappointing development imo, not so much about the break up of Sam/Dean (I'm not really hardcore about any ship), but because undoubtedly it would lead to copious amounts of gender fail both in the show and, inevitably, in fandom.

I can't remember exactly, but I thought Dean's desire for the wife and kids was mentioned in another recent episode. I get that he was checking up on Sam, but they also seemed to linger and emphasize his sadness in a way that made me think it entailed both his recognition of Sam's loss of innocence and his own loss of opportunities.

because undoubtedly it would lead to copious amounts of gender fail both in the show and, inevitably, in fandom.

Uh, I kind of foresee that happening no matter where the story goes.

Dean did mention the desire for normal not long ago... . It came up in shades of meaning in his conversation with the doctor-in-his-head at the asylum, for one thing. I think he also might have mentioned it in 5:10, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's a subtle but definitely growing theme with his character this season.

Yes, I thought I noticed mention of this before 5.11. I just can't quite remember.

I actually wondered myself if maybe they're setting it up for Dean to leave hunting at the end of S5 because Jensen would like to go have a life. I pay very little attention to RL discussions about the actors, but I do know he's just gotten engaged, and I think a lot of that has to do with hoping he'll be free to move back from Vancouver. Of course, she's from Idaho, which isn't all that far from BC, but still... .

Then I wondered if it wasn't perhaps just more of the role reversal we've been seeing, where Sam is driven by the need to hunt (for his own reasons, not the same as Dean's circa S1 and S2) and Dean wants normal. I think he knows he can't have it. I think it's wistful resignation. It's the resignation, actually, that has me most worried. I'm wondering if of the two brothers it's not going to be DEAN who says "Yes."

I was thinking they were setting up to let Jared go by bringing in a different actor to play Sam. They might be able to get away with that,by using the bodyswitch idea, since Dean and Castiel seem to be much more popular with fans than Sam is. I don't think the show is viable without Jensen, though. Hee, something else I can worry about.

Probably the writers don't have any clear idea what they are doing. I often think they just randomly throw things out there and see what connects.

That's what I was thinking!
They do drop a lot of hints, and quite heavily (I feel), about Dean being tired of hunting.
It's as if Dean's becoming Sam-from-the-beginning-of-Spn, and in reverse Sam himself is getting more rigorous and radical and a little bit like the Dean-from-Spn1.
I do like character growth, I really do, but Dean yearning for the picket fence and all possibilities that sort of longing implies, it truly does leave me worried.
Especially because I myself can't see Dean ever leaving his Sammy, and boy am I afraid our show's going to break my heart by making Dean do exactly that.

Glad I'm not the only one who's worried, though. :(

Yes, my heart will also be broken. *clings*
