Okay I know I'm totally behind. What the heck did we even watch in October now that November is almost half over? Here are the ones that impressed me the most. Or - at least - the ones that are fresh in my memory.
Near Dark Great little vampire flick. I love the idea of redneck vampires and somehow it works really well. Jenny Wright plays the love interest. She was the groupie in Pink Floyd: The Wall, so it's nice to see her in a larger part. It's about a good ole farmboy who falls for her and gets bitten, but her nomadic family doesn't really accept him. He's just not ruthless enough to kill other people, but they are. The scene where they ransack a roadhouse bar is wonderfully brutal. As a whole, just a great, great vampire flick. Three big cheers.
Maniac Great early 80s gritty New York flick. I love movies about crazy people and this one's pretty damned awesome. Joe Spinell plays the maniac, a man who just can't help but kill. If the victim is a woman, he scalps her and keeps her hair. Disturbing? Yes, but it couldn't be any other way. Enter Caroline Munro, a photographer that accidentally takes his picture. He somehow befriends her, but then it's only a matter of time before his dark secrets are revealed. I just found the whole thing amazing. I'll go out on a limb here and give it four cheers - one for Joe Spinell, one for Caroline Munro, one for New York and one for the early 80s grittiness of it all. Great stuff.
Trick or Treat Fun little 80s flick with cameos from Ozzy Osbourne as a fundamentalist preacher and Gene Simmons as a disc jockey. It's about a dorky metal head kid who becomes possessed by the spirit of his idol, hard rocker Sammi Curr. Well maybe not possessed, but he sets the demon soul free by playing Curr's last album backward - and mayhem ensues. I found it thoroughly enjoyable and I'll give it two cheers.
Troll 2 The worst movie ever made they say? I don't know, but the funny thing is there wasn't even a troll in the movie. It's about a family that takes a trip to a place called Nilbog, which is goblin spelled backwards. There are goblins in their midst and it's up to a young boy and his dead grandfather's spirit to keep the family from turning into these incredibly cheesy midget creatures. There's the teenage sister who is followed by her jock boyfriend and his dorky friends. One of the friends falls prey to a witchy woman who turns him into a tree. Anyway I'd be curious to see this documentary, just for the fun of it. I'll give it one cheer. If I gave it anything higher it would undermine its incredible badness.
