I'm back in Calgary for a few days, where I'll be attending a Kohler update school. Normally, these are one-afternoon presentations, though I often spend a couple of extra days in Calgary to do some shopping and visiting. This time however, it's a three-day hands-on school, where we will be tearing down one of Kohler's new EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) engines. Yes, EFI has come to "small engines". "Small" being a relative term as these are still the bigger 20+ HP twin-cylinder machines. I remember them talking about these engines a couple years ago, and I guess there are enough of them out there now that they want to make sure that all of their service dealers are familiar with them. I recall that Kohler didn't fool around with these engines either; Rather than trying to make their own EFI module, they went to a company that has been building them for cars for years, and had them design one for them.
The resulting EFI engine is apparently about 30% more efficient than the normal aspirated engine, which can add up to significant savings over time. Let's face it, gasoline isn't getting any cheaper. :/
The classes start on Tuesday morning; I'm going out to my friend's farm tomorrow, and plan to do some shopping on Monday. Hope to get a chance to meet up with some other Calgary friends while I'm here. Please leave feedback here or on FB if you want to hook up. :)
