Games Canadians Play...

Most people tend to associate Hockey with Canadians, but another popular sport up here is Curling.  Curling is like playing a giant game of Shuffleboard, but you play it on a sheet of ice, throwing heavy "rocks" down the ice and briskly sweeping a broom in front of the rock to make it move faster or slower, and to some degree where you want it ( Read more... )

Curling is one of the more *amusing* sports to watch, simply because the bit with the brooms looks so ridiculous. Still, it's a remarkably *precise* sport, with the stone release being conducted with all the finesse of building a house of cards, further tuned by the broom-sweeping to change he friction levels of the ice. Fascinating stuff, really.

Only sport that California is known for that most of the other states don't is surfing. Can't really think of any uniquely Californian *team* sports, though we certainly play the usual array of US favorites.

My grandfather curled for many years when he had his eyesight. He was on a team that won the New Brunswick senior mens' provincial championship back in the late 70s. :)
